WhatchamaDrawit

Skateboarder

This is my whatchamadrawit drawing. For this project I received a sort of silly prompt and had to make a complete picture of it. My two possibilities were to draw a self-portrait without picking up my pencil, or to draw a tiger with sunglasses riding a skateboard. I started out by looking up some references images of skateboarders so I could figure out position I should draw the tiger in. I quickly decided I didn't want the tiger to be realistic, but to have more of a cartoon tiger. I sketched out the body and then I focused on the head/face. I thought that at this point I should find some tiger pictures to look at to model the head. I sketched out the face in pencil, then drew some sunglasses on him. Next I drew the skateboard.

I started shading the tiger, however I soon realized that would want some color in the image. Before I colored it, I wanted to add a ramp in the background. I went through and colored the tiger, gave it stripes, and added on some pants. Next I drew the flames on the skateboard and colored them. Finally, I colored the ramp in the background. I chose to make it two-tones because that is how many of the skate ramps I have seen look.

Once i thought the project was good, I wanted to make it better. I wanted to add something to make the background more engaging. One thing that comes to mine for me when I think of skaters is graffiti. I decided I wanted to have something written in the background of picture. I looked up the typical font for graffiti, and mimicked the style to write the word "tiger". Finally, I outlined the letters and created an ombre color fade.
