Color Wheel

Value Strip / Stained Glass

This color wheel project was a study on paint. The first project I did was a color value scale. I made two grids with eleven rectangles. I had to choose a primary color, I chose yellow, and add black and white to it. Adding black is called shades, and adding white is called tints. I also chose a secondary color to do. I chose purple so I mixed blue and red. I added a small amount of black to the purple and yellow and then more, and more until I had my four darker shades. The purple was already dark so this was more difficult. I added a small amount of white to the purple and yellow then more and mo to get my four lighter tints. The yellow was very light so this was more difficult. I did a second layer to make it less streaky.

The next project I did was a color wheel like project. I had to make a total of 84 colors on this project. This was accomplished by making the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue; the three secondary colors: orange, purple, and green; and the six tertiary colors: red orange, red violet, blue violet, blue green, yellow green, and yellow orange. Each of these I made with three tints and three shades.

From the start I had the idea to make birds. I made silhouettes of three scissor tail fly catcher birds on a branch. Then I used a ruler and drew many lines with a pencil until I ended up with 84 shapes. This took a long time, for I had to count and recount many times. I had primary color paints and black and white. I had to mix colors to create the other colors. The tertiary colors I made by starting with the main color and adding a very small amount the Minor color, i.e. Red-violet would be a large amount of red with a small amount of blue. After creating each color I made the tints and shade and filled the the shapes.

After filling in each shape I needed to paint the birds. I had many ideas but eventually decided on silver. I tested a darker and a lighter silver but eventually decided on a light blue silver. I filled in the silhouette with this paint. After this dried and added another layer and added a second layer to all the 84 colors to make them opaque or non streaky. I had a light silver paint marker, which I used to outline each shape and the silhouette. I used a black marker to make the outline.
