Concentration Sculptures

ELEGANCE and DELICACY

For this project, I needed to create a series of sculptures. The theme of my sculptures was dragonflies. I also like the idea of a ZoomIn/ZoomOut project. I think that insects are very interesting and intricate creatures. I wanted to create a very detailed, large, zoom in on an insect and a small, life-sized version of the same insect. I chose dragonflies because I like them, and they have beautiful wings and eyes. I began by looking up reference images to discover which kind of dragonfly I would end up making.

For my first project I did a zoom out. I was inspired to make this one, based on the Hand Sculpture, which I enjoyed making. The first thing I made was the hand. I made this the same way was I made the hands from my past project with alginate. My hand came out almost perfectly, with only one broken finger that I needed to glue back on. next I made my first dragon fly. I made it out of sculpy. I also made the wings out of thing wire to match the shape of a dragonflies wings. Next I wanted to add a pop of color. I did this by rolling out very thin rolls of sculpy, and laying it over aluminum foil. I also made leaves out of different shades of green sculpy. I also made some red, pink, and blue roses. Then I glued all the pieces to a piece of styrofoam. I thought it looked like the hand was emerging from this small patch of flowers.

For my second project, I did a zoom in. I did this by making a large version of a dragonfly. I was inspired to make this like my assembly project from foundations of art. I started out by making armatures for the eyes and the body. I made them out of newspaper and tape. Next I did the wings. Before this I already had these fairy wings, which had a thing cloth covering that I liked. However, these wings were the wrong shape and color. I fixed these problems by pressing the sides into thin wings. I also dripped watercolor down the sides to give a ombre/drip effect on the wings. I surfaced the eyes next with a very cool material I discovered. It was a colored, see-through plastic wrap. I first surfaced the entire eye in yellow, then made blue circles for the tops, similar to the way dragon fly eyes look. I surfaced the body in the material from an Arizona Tea can. I really like the colors on the can and I thought it had a dragon fly color. I used the material from a can to line in between the eyes to separate them. I also made the bug's nose/mouth and surfaced in blue tissue paper. I then glued the wings to the back. Next i had to make the tails. I rolled up a piece of sturdy paper, and surfaced it in the blue plastic wrap. I wrapped tail in thick wire. I also used this wire legs and antennae.

I really enjoyed making both of these projects. My first project has a much darker feel and my second is much brighter. I am very happy with how they both came out. This whole project, with both series was very fun. I was able to adapt all of the things I liked from other projects into this one.
