It Doesn't Matter How You Look At It

For this project we had to create a poster that encourages others to consider organ and tissue donation. I began this project by brainstorming unique captions for this contest. I ended up choosing the caption, "It doesn't matter how you look at it, organ and tissue donation is a good idea", which I believed lended itself to a project that could be rotated. In many projects, after it is finished, the artist turns their project to decided which direction they want it to be displayed, I wanted to play off of this and create something that would make artistic sense no matter which way it is displayed.

I was inspired to work with the art mannequins we have in the classroom. I started originally by repositioning them, but eventually got comfortable sketching them from memory. I rotated the paper after I drew each one. For the first four that I completed I traced them in pen and then added different organs in color. I wanted to have more going on in the background, so I continued to draw more mannequins. I used black watercolor paint to fill the background.

I printed out the text that I wanted to use and traced it in pen over the light table. I broke the phrase up into four parts so that it could still be read whichever way it is flipped. I then went in with pen to add shadows to the mannequins, and I used colored pencil to add tints to the organs. I am pretty happy with how the piece turned out, but I wish I could have emphasized the organs more to make them more obvious.
