Circle Project

EartH

This is my circle project, in which the only credential/ theme was to have a circle in the project. I decided I wanted to create the Earth. I also thought would be interesting to have a space scene with the moon. I later decided to add the daisies on the corner. I made this project on canvas and used acrylics. This project is slightly informally balanced, meaning one side had slightly more "weight". but it is pretty even.

When creating this project I wanted perfect circles. I used stencils for the shape of the moon, but there was not a stencil big enough for the earth, so I traced a stool to get the circle. I created a sketch of where I decided where the moon would be and i made the continents. Then i started painting. I chose to use a few different shades of blue when painting the water to give it movement and texture. I then painted the continents in colors that contrasted with blue to make them pop. After painting these I painted the background black, but it did not like the way that looked, so i took some of the blue from my water and mixed it with black and painted some streaks to give the background movement as well. After this I painted the moon.

At this point I felt like if I were done the painting seemed incomplete. I think the reason for this was because it was so imbalanced with the symmetrical Earth and then the moon on one side so I had to decide what to put on the other side to balance it out. I considered some space things but I decided to go in a different direction. I thought about how important nature is as part of Earth itself so i decided to put something from nature there. I ended up deciding on daisies. I sketched out a few different styles before putting it on the canvas. With a pencil I added the flowers. I stared by adding two and painted them. I thought this looked fine but I wanted It to seem like the flowers were coming out of the side of the page so I painted a third. Then looking at it I thought the did not contrast the background enough and I highlighted them with black paint pens. This really made the flowers pop but now they were the focus and I wanted the Earth to be the focus. I decided to highlight The moon in silver and the continents in corresponding colors. I definitely think this helped.

Originally it was meant to show that even though each continent and people are different they are all part of the same thing (Earth). Now I feel like it means more that nature is a beautiful and important part of the earth. It kind of shows that Earth would be able survive without humans but we need the Earth to survive. This art project is a kind of thank you to the earth and nature. I am not super happy with some of the flower petals and would probably redo them if I could. I also don't really like all the rough edges around the Earth but you cant really tell them without looking up close.
