For this project we had to create a piece of art that would raise awareness about climate change. I wanted to create a project that would be unique and draw people's attention. There are many projects out there with the same general ideas, and I wanted to try to combine some ideas to create a new one. My main focus of this project was to portray air pollution and carbon emissions and their effect on the planet.
I started out the project by drawing a circle to be the earth. I sketched out some factories pumping out smoke. In the background I wanted to add fire for multiple reasons, first because fire releases carbon into the atmosphere, and because it would represent the earth getting warmer. I started with acrylic paint, painting the background. I made a flat black in the upper area while painting fire down below, focusing on my textures. I added some black spots in the fire to try to make it look realistic. I needed to paint the foreground next. I started with the Earth. I made multiple shades of green and blue and added them on in layers. Next I painted the factories that were pumping out smoke. I used browns and grays to contrast with the bright colors seen elsewhere. I then made the smoke.
I wanted to add more sharp lines, so I went over the outlines of some of the objects with black paint pens. I think this helped to make them pop. Originally, I considered making a very graphic image with very flat colors. However I like the textures I got in the water, smoke, and fire. I am happy with the way this project turned out, although I wonder if the fire in the background feels too dramatic or cliche. Other than that, I think the project gets to point across about the danger of emissions to causing global warming.
