Magic Trick

These are my two pieces for our class collaboration. Every art class taught by my teacher was given a one by one inch square from a large photo that had been posterized. Each square therefore had two colors, white and black. We were supposed to take the pattern in our small square and duplicate it into a larger 4.5x4.5 piece of art. This was meant to create a abstract looking piece of art with only two values.

The first project I just made with crayola markers. I chose yellow and blue, a light and dark contrasting color. I copied the shapes with pencil matching the small image, and then I filled these in with yellow and blue. I made all of the yellow lines horizontal while I made the blue lines vertical. I like this one, I think it is interesting and matches the other one well, but it does not really feel like anything special.

The second one I wanted to make more exciting so I decided to use playing cards for a collage. I used the front as the lights and the backs for the darks. I cut small squares and rectangles. I used a pencil to get the general shapes and then I glued the different pieces to match the shapes of the original 1x1 square. I like this one more, it is more interesting, however it does not match the shapes quite as detailed as the original.
