Beautiful Oops

Cephalopod

This is my beautiful oops project. For this project, I began with a piece of watercolor paper that had ink spilled onto it. The point of the project was to use the ink spots to create something new. When I first saw the ink spot I thought it looked like little minnows. This put the idea of water into my head. As I continued to think about this idea, I came up with the idea of a squid. I knew that squid ink was a thing so I started to look up pictures of squids inking.

I drew the body of the squid with exaggerated features, such as a longer head, longer more defines tentacles, large oval eyes etc... I also gave the squid suction cups on the tentacles. I did not want to have a white background, so I used water color to paint it blue and green, varying from dark to light as the page goes up. some of this got onto the squid so I knew I would need to cover it up later. Next I painted the squid with water color. I used a pastel orange for the posterior surface or "hat" on the squid. I used reds and yellows for the tentacles and body of the squid.

At this point in the project it looked very flat. I wanted the squid to look more shiny so I added some white streaks and dots to make it have a sort of glare. I also painted the suction cups white so they would stand out and be more bold. I thought the ink was not prominent enough, some had been covered up with blue or orange. I went over it with black watercolor and added more stops to make it stand out.
