Time Capsules

Zoom & Crop

Past

Future

For this project we had to make time capsules. These are a series of observational projects based on prompts that show our artistic development over the course of our art careers. This set had us draw four pictures: a crumpled or folded piece of paper, a zoomed in part of our bodies, an object to represent our past, and an object to represent out future.

I started by folding a piece of paper into a cootie catcher, which I feel has an intriguing shape. I started out by sketching the outline and creases. After this I outlined each of these important lines with with pen. I erased the pencil so that the drawing was pure contour. I wanted to add something a bit more intriguing in the background to add contrast. So I used different shades of green to create four-leaf clovers. I felt that a cootie catcher sort of represents luck and fortunes so I had these clovers.

The next time capsule I created was the zoomed in part of the body. I drew a life sized drawing of my fingers cropped into a 1.5 inch square. I shaded the fingers and nails and drew the creases with different shades of drawing pencils. I had many layers in the fingers as they overlapped each other. I am happy with how this one turned out.

The next project I had to do was make an object that represents my past. I chose this piggy bank that I have in my bedroom. I have had it as long as I remember; I represents how I have always had goals and expectations for myself when no one said I had to. I sketched the outline in pencil, and then used acrylic and water color for some pattern on the pig. This was a bad idea because I forgot it was drawing paper, so it frayed a bit. I then outlines the entire thing in pen.

the final time capsule is an object that represents my future. I spent much time thinking about this, but I felt like this was a difficult project because the future is so unsure. I have had a very busy weekend with working and college tours, so I had been able to start this project for I while. When I finally did, I had returned from my EMT class, and it was past 11:00pm when I started it. I realized that I don't know much in my future for sure, but I do know that if I keep living like this I will need a lot of coffee. I drew my dad's coffee pot, with selective color for the button. It is black, so I also chose to do selective shading.
