Observational Color Study

Rock Out

This is my Observational Color Study. For this project, I had to find something in the room, and draw it with untraditional color. I ended up wanting to draw a water bottle. I also was thinking about drawing a hand. Because of this I quickly decided to draw a hand inside a water bottle, sort of like the idea of body parts inside jars. This is based on the Canopic Jars of the Egyptians which they kept certain body parts (most common internal organs) inside.

I drew the water bottle first but realized that it would be difficult to make a water bottle with nontraditional color because water bottles can be many different colors. I decided that I would just make the bottle a different color. I chose blue with a green lid. I decided to use colored pencil for this project to try something different, and because colored pencil had many different color possibilities. Before I colored it however, I drew the hand. I used my own hand as a reference and I drew it in a rock out symbol.

I colored the creases of the hand purple and the skin a dark orange color. This just looked more intense than a normal skin color. I decided an interesting thing to add would be to add color to the liquid. I decided red would be a good contrast with the blue. I burnished the red and then went over the whole thing in a faded blue. I used burnishing to color the lid green. I thought it was really interesting how the horizon line fell behind the cup. I chose to make this more obvious in the background. I used colored pencils to make stripes in the background. All of the stripes above the line were red and all the ones below the horizon line were yellow.
