Tiny People

For this project, we each got a piece of paper that had an ink spot on this. The goal of this project was to create something out of an ink spot. It is meant to force us into creative problem solving. I received one with two black spots in the middle of the page. I thought at first that it could be the nose of a zoomed in animal. I wanted to go a bit out of my immediate instincts though so I decided to do flowers instead.

I started by making more black spots. Each spot I added yellow petals to, to make them look like sunflowers. I started by making the lines very purposeful, but then I decided to make the painting more gestural. I added twisting stems and leaves around the plants coming down to my border. I used watercolor to add these as well as some grass. At this point I wanted to add something that would force people to really look at my work closely. At first I considered drawing a fairy on the flower, but after I had drawn one, I really liked how the looked. I decided to create many small outlines of people sitting on the leaves and crawling on the stem. I really liked the way they looked.

I decided to make a blue background. I kept the very gestural brush strokes in the background with different shades of blue. While I liked the way my sky turned out, I do not like the way that it reduced the contrast with the flowers. I do not think they stand out as much. I also wanted to add more people, but unfortunately I did not have as small as a pen, resulting in the people not having the exact same styling and shape as my first ones. Overall I do like this piece and I would consider pursuing more projects similar to it.
