"Born in Gamtofte (1926), Denmark, studied at Odense Technical College before enrolling at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen as an architecture student. He worked from 1950-1952 in the architectural firm of Arne Jacobsen and founded an independent studio for architecture and design in 1955. Verner Panton died in 1998 in Copenhagen. "
"Considered one of Denmark’s most influential 20th-century furniture and interior designers, during his career, Panton created innovative and futuristic works. His style was very “1960s” but regained popularity at the end of the 20th century; as of 2004, Panton’s most well-known furniture models are still in production (at Vitra, among others)." Panton used innovative materials, distinctive shapes and strong, bold colours in his designs.
This is an iconic chair, because it was the worlds first, single piece, plastic moulded chair. It was designed to be stackable and have an organic shape. It continues to be produced today in large numbers.
It has changed material several times as the product has been developed. Initially it was made in polystyrene, however over time the appearance degraded. Then it was made in polyurethane, however this was expensive. Now it is produced in the less expensive polypropylene, the same material often used to make garden furniture.
