This topic is intended to give students the experience of preparing for study at GCSE level by undertaking a unit dedicated to Product Design. Students will be provided with a 'design brief' inspired by those published by the WJEC examination board. Students will be expected to carry out research and development in order to derive a solution to a specific design problem. They will undertake an 'iterative' approach to designing a potential solution and will seek the feedback of users to help improve their solutions.
Whilst students will likely not create a final, finished product, they will undertake extensive hand sketching and rendering, 3D computer aided design and practical modelling to create prototypes of their ideas and explore their viability. All of these skills are essential in GCSE study.
This topic is covered over two terms. As students also undertake a term studying catering, this could be a continuous period of two terms or could be split up with catering taught in-between (depending upon timetabling and classes).
Here is this year's product design 'contextual' challenges. You will investigate each one and choose one of the briefs to complete for your project. The briefs challenge you to find a design problem which needs to be solved using the criteria provided.
It is up to you to determine your own design brief using your chosen challenge.
You will investigate client problems, potential solutions, create models and design a prototype design proposal.
These are the challenges from last year. Do you notice how they are quite ambiguous (vague / unclear)? This is because you are expected to find the potential design problems yourself. The challenge is merely a framework to help you focus.
It is very important to pay close attention to the keywords given in the contextual challenge as ignoring them will result in you losing focus on the design problem.
