Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps
Last week we ran out of time and did not get to our culminating centers for the human body. Therefore, we will start Monday with these activities and it will possibly go into Tuesday as well. Students will rotate through centers with different activities such as, playing Operation, writing their name in braille, and creating a spinal cord using noodles and more!
Following that activity, we will begin our next unit, the Ancient Roman Civilization! Here is an overview of the unit:
Students dive into ancient Rome in this unit, studying its historical events and culture and reading the legend of Romulus and Remus about Rome’s founding and several myths about Roman gods and goddesses. They study the historical rise and fall of the Roman republic and empire, as well as key historical figures such as Hannibal, Julius Caesar, and Augustus.
Students review the spelling patterns of r-controlled vowels as well as spellings of the sound /ee/. They review verb tenses and the verbs to be and to have as well as subject-verb agreement, learning to change the spelling of verbs to match various subjects. They also study the common suffixes –er, –or, – ist, –ian, –y, and –al, reviewing how suffixes change the meaning of root words and how they may change the part of speech of that word.
Students develop their opinion writing skills in this unit, working on a range of opinion pieces that culminate in an opinion paragraph about which Roman god or goddess deserves a statue in present day Rome.
Homework: No homework this week
