Skills we will be working on this week are:

Reading:

identify the themes of the story and explain how characters’ actions demonstrate specific story themes (hospitality, friendship, responsibility, irresponsibility)
identify literary devices such as, dialogue, narration, personification, and perspective (we have conversation on these topics as we read the chapters of the story)

Speaking/ Listening:

listen to a Read-Aloud for details that describe a character
discuss the main idea and details of a read-aloud text

Writing:

complete a graphic organizer to prepare for writing an opinion piece
draft and revise an opinion paragraph about how one specific character displays one of the 4 themes of the story

Language/Foundational Skills:

use syllabication to break written words into syllables
soft c/g spelling pattern

Homework: soft c/g worksheet (handed out Monday in class and should be in the takehome section in their binder)

Math-Mrs. Bennett

We are beginning our next math unit: Multiplying by Multiples of 10. In this unit, students will learn how the distributive property can make multiplication easier by breaking apart larger problems into smaller, more manageable ones. For example, solving 6 × 30 can be thought of as (6 × 3) × 10. Understanding this property helps students see the structure of numbers and gives them flexible strategies they can apply to more complex problems. To support this learning, we’ll also use base-10 blocks so students can visualize what it means to multiply by multiples of 10 and build a stronger connection between the concrete and abstract ideas.

At home, you can support your child by pointing out everyday examples of multiples of 10 — like packs of 10 snacks, coins, or bundles of pencils — and asking them to explain how they would use multiplication to quickly figure out the total.

Homework 9/29 - 10/2

I am making some changes to our homework routine this month! I want to incorporate homework that corresponds with what is currently being taught in class, along with our Simple Solutions spiral review. Students will have all week to complete the following assignments. It breaks down to one worksheet a day. Reflex will not be a required assignment this week, so students can adjust to this change in routine, but will be given time during class to complete Reflex sessions a few times during the week.

Social Studies- Mrs. Crush

We will continue this week in Social Studies delving into our civic standards. The students will work on:

Explaining the basic purposes and functions of different governing bodies.
Comparing how diverse societies maintain order, safety, and enforce rules and laws.
Examining civic virtues and democratic principles across various world communities.
Understanding how processes, rules, and laws influence governance and problem-solving in diverse communities.

Religion- Mrs. Crush

We will continue Chapter 2: God is Love. This chapter will help students:

know that God reveals Himself to us as the Blessed Trinity, a perfect communion of love.
recall that God has a plan to share His love with us and He invites us to be in communion with Him.
know that the theological virtues fives us the ability to be holy.
begin to know that we were created for true happiness that comes from the gift of self to God and others.

Chapter 2: God is Love Test is Tuesday, October 7.

*Items to study: Ch.2 Review (in Word of Life workbook), Words to Know (these will be inside their binders and on Google Classroom), activities in the chapter, and highlighted text.

1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, October 29. This will be complete on Google Classroom.

Blessings in a Backpack

Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
