What we are Learning This Week
Math: Mrs. Bennett
This week, our students will embark on an exciting exploration of our base 10 number system and the concept of place value. Here’s what to look forward to:
Comparing Number Systems: Students will compare our number system to buying items in bulk, similar to shopping at Costco. Students will use pasta noodles and add 10 noodles into a sandwich size bag. After they have ten of these, we will put them into a gallon sized bag to create a new "package." We will do this 10 times until we can create the next level "package" which will be worth 1,000 noodles. This will help them connect buying in bulk to our number system.
Creating New Systems: Each student will have the opportunity to create their own number system, experimenting within systems like base 5 and base 12, and discovering how these variations influence numerical representation. Afterwards, students will share how they feel about the way we group numbers after experiencing a different system.
Homework:
We are starting homework this week. Students should complete one Simple Solutions lesson a night. The assigned lessons are listed below. We will check/grade our homework every Friday, so students have the opportunity to ask questions and review problems as needed. We will take a SS Quiz biweekly on Friday, starting this week. The quiz questions correspond to the homework, which is why students should take their time when completing a lesson and have an adult check over their work nightly. The homework is never counted as a letter grade, but the quizzes will be included in their Trimester averages.Â
*Students may work ahead in their books, but please ensure to only work a few lessons ahead. This will help ensure the material on their homework align with the material on the Friday quiz.

Social Studies: Mrs. Crush
This week, we will continue our exploration of civics standards. Our students have been actively engaged in learning about:
Diverse Forms of Self-Government: They are comparing the political form of monarchy with the self-governing systems developed in colonial America.
Civic Participation: Students are understanding the importance of civic participation through local examples from past and current events.
Processes for Change: They are describing the processes people use to change rules and laws and how these developments improve communities to meet the needs of citizens.
I'm excited to see our students’ enthusiasm and commitment to learning about their roles as responsible citizens!
Religion: Mrs. Crush
This week in Religion, we will continue Chapter 1, God's Loving Plan, in our Word of Life workbooks. Through these lessons, students will discover that those who seek God will find Him. They will learn about their calling to be in communion with God, understand the concept of truth, and review God's plan of salvation. Most importantly, they will see that true happiness and truth can only be found in God.
