I am excited to get back into the swing of things now that I’ve returned from maternity leave! Thank you all for your support during this transition—it’s wonderful to be back in the classroom with your children. To get started, students will complete a chapter check-in covering the skills taught while I was away. This check-in is not for a grade, but it will give me a clear picture of where students are in their understanding so I can determine what we may need to review before moving forward. The results will guide our instruction over the next three weeks. Students who are ready to progress will jump into our next unit on area and perimeter, an engaging topic that builds on our understanding of multiplication and division!
As we return to our regular routines, students will have two Simple Solutions lessons a week. Like November, they will continue to have 3 Reflex sessions per week as part of their homework leading up to Christmas break. Maintaining this routine is essential, as it helps us build a solid foundation of our basic facts by the end of 3rd grade. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting strong math habits at home!

3 Reflex Sessions (use Reflex calendar to help track!)
In Social Studies this week, the students will continue their activities on the story, A River Ran Wild by Lynne Cherry. The link to the read aloud book us below. In this lesson, participants will determine what rivers are near their homes and reflect on how much we use the rivers and water in our everyday lives. This lesson will also practice map and close reading skills.
We will complete Chapter 6: The Human Person. This chapter will help students:
understand that once our communion with God was broken, sin grew in the world.
have a basic understanding of what foreshadowing means and how certain Old Testament events and people relate to Christ, the sacraments, and the Church.
understand that a covenant is a sacred agreement that forms a bond between God and His people.
understand that God chose the descendants of Abraham to become His Chosen People as part of His plan to bring all people into communion with Him.

2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, February 11. This will be completed on Google Classroom. Optional: complete log on paper.
Altar Serving Training:
Some of our 3rd graders participated in Altar Server Training last week with Father Matthew! If your child would like to begin serving at weekend Masses, please reach out to Patrick Parris at pparris@ascension-parish.com. Patrick will help get them set up with Mass times and dates.
As for school Mass, 3rd graders will begin serving after Christmas. At that time, I will pair them with an experienced server so they can learn and practice alongside them. Students will be notified about a week in advance if they are scheduled to serve during a school Mass.
I’m looking forward to seeing our 3rd graders begin serving at weekend Masses—it’s such a wonderful way for them to be involved in our parish community!
Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
