Cooler days are here! 🍂 Please remind your child(ren) to bring a cozy coat or wear pants to school. We’ll be heading outside for brain breaks, recess, and fresh air unless it’s raining or freezing. Let’s keep everyone warm and ready for outdoor fun! ❄️🧥
Important Reminder:
We will send home graded/completed work on Wednesdays. There will be a sheet for you to sign weekly showing that you have seen (and removed) all of their work. Forms from the office will also be included. Students have labeled the front pocket in their binder "Take Home".
Skills we are developing this week include:
Reading:
Students will perform Don Quixote readers theatre scripts this week and act out their skits for one another. This a great way to work on fluency (and also make reading fun)!
Writing:
using transitional words when introducing examples and in concluding statements
editing their drafts of their persuasve essay about Don Quixote
Grammar:
create sentences using words and phrases to compare and contrast (did not get to this last week)
review past skills: subject-verb agreement and commas in series
Morphology:
determining meaning of a word using context and morphology for common morphemes (il-, ir-, inter-, -ness, and tract)
Homework: 2nd draft typed by Friday (to be proof read by a peer)-Many may have this done already, as they are all working at their own pace.

5th Grade – Yellow Group
The Yellow group is currently working on solving inequalities. Students are focusing on solving two-step inequalities while keeping their work organized and clearly shown. For example, students might solve a problem such as 3x + 5 > 20 by first subtracting 5 and then dividing by 3 to determine the possible values for x. We will also incorporate fractions and decimals into our inequalities and practice graphing the solutions on a number line to visually represent the solution set. The chapter test will take place on Monday, March 16, and students have a study guide available to help them review the material.
5th Grade – Blue Group
The Blue group is finishing our chapter on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Students are learning how to find a common denominator in order to combine fractions such as 1/4 + 2/3, and we will conclude the unit by working with mixed numbers. This includes learning how to subtract mixed numbers when regrouping is required, such as solving 4 1/5 − 2 3/5 by regrouping one whole into fifths. Students will practice modeling these problems and explaining their thinking. The chapter test will take place on Monday, March 16, and a study guide is available to help students prepare.

Social Studies: Mrs. Crush
Students will continue researching a topic related to Social Studies and preparing a Google Slides presentation. This is a collaborative project with Social Studies and Technology. Students will present to their classmates at the end of the project.
We are also continuing our learning about Ancient China and how geography helped shape one of the world’s earliest civilizations. Students are exploring how the Yellow River supported farming and early settlements, leading to the development of organized societies and dynasties. We are also discussing how Chinese rulers governed, the role of religion and traditions, and important achievements and inventions that influenced Chinese culture and the wider world. Through this unit, students are learning how geography, government, and culture all worked together to shape life in Ancient China.
Religion: Mrs. Crush
For Religion, we will complete Ch.11 "God Gives Us Power and Strength" in our Word of Life workbook. In this chapter, students will:

begin to know how, in the Old Testament, God prepared signs and actions to be used in the Sacrament of Confirmation.
learn that bishops have been the ordinary ministers of Confirmation in the Latin Rite since the time of the Apostles.
Words to Know: Confirmation, gifts of the Holy Spirit, laying on of hands, witness
Later in the week, we will begin Saints Madness. More information to come!

Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
