Signature Sheets: Green signature sheets will be coming home this week on WEDNESDAY. Please remove all papers from your child's binder, sign the green sheet on the correct date, and put it back in their binder. They are to turn it in to me on Thursday morning. This system is used as a communication tool between home and school, and ensuring us you see your childs work, grades, and know how they are performing on tasks.
Students: Please make sure you keep track of your iPad, charger, and headphone adapter! All of these items will need to be returned at the end of the school year in the same condition they were received.
Let's work together to keep our new technology safe and in great shape all year long! 💙
What we are Learning This Week
Math: Ms. Shell
This week, our students will embark on an exciting exploration of our base 10 number system and the concept of place value. Here’s what to look forward to:
Comparing Number Systems: Students will compare our number system to buying items in bulk, similar to shopping at Costco. Students will use pasta noodles and add 10 noodles into a sandwich size bag. After they have ten of these, we will put them into a gallon sized bag to create a new "package." We will do this 10 times until we can create the next level "package" which will be worth 1,000 noodles. This will help them connect buying in bulk to our number system.
Creating New Systems: Each student will have the opportunity to create their own number system, experimenting within systems like base 5 and base 12, and discovering how these variations influence numerical representation. Afterwards, students will share how they feel about the way we group numbers after experiencing a different system.
Homework:
SS Lessons #1 - #4 Due Friday
SS Quiz Friday 8/28
We are starting homework this week. Students should complete one Simple Solutions lesson a night. The assigned lessons can always be found in your childs agenda. We will check/grade our homework every Friday, so students have the opportunity to ask questions and review problems as needed. We will take a SS Quiz biweekly on Friday, starting this week. The quiz questions correspond to the homework, which is why students should take their time when completing a lesson and have an adult check over their work nightly. The homework is never counted as a letter grade, but the quizzes will be included in their Trimester averages.
*Students may work ahead in their books, but please ensure to only work a few lessons ahead. This will help ensure the material on their homework align with the material on the Friday quiz.*

Reading/Writing:
-We will continue learning more about personal narrative writing and we will read a couple different ones. As we read, we will focus on using what characters do, say, and think to determine character traits. This is an inferencing skills that extends into all types of genres. We will also put an emphasis on sensory details and how authors can pain pictures in the minds of a reader but simply using words. They will get practice writing using sensory details (strong verbs and adjectives) as well
Morphology:
-Latin root "rupt" meaning to burst or break (ex: dis+rupt+ing= disrupting means the action of breaking apart)
Homework: Morphology worksheet (Latin root rupt)- Due Friday
*This was passed out on Monday and put into their Take Home section of their binder
Social Studies: Mr. Lovett
Last week, we continued our discussion and exploration of maps. We learned how to use the legend on a map and then how to use that legend to answer questions about a map. We looked at a road map of Kentucky and how to use the grid system to locate various places on the map. This week, we will introduce Columbus and the European discovery of the Americas. The class will discover why Columbus sailed west instead of east to reach the Indies. We will learn about the native peoples they found here and set the stage for the eventual English colonization of the Eastern Seaboard of what is now the United States. The students will pretend and write about how they would have felt as a sailor on board Columbus’ ships and how it would have felt as a native person. The will be an in class assignment each day and there will be a quiz at the end of the week to recap what they learned.
In Writing and Grammar (WAG), we discussed what a noun is and how to identify nouns. We sorted them in to people, places, things, and ideas. This week will begin our discussion about the differences between common and proper nouns. We will also start our cursive practice during WAG. There is no homework in WAG this week.
