What we are Learning This Week
Math: Ms. Shell
We will focus this week on preparing for our Student Led conferences. Students are reflecting on their strengths, areas for improvement, and goals for the remainder of the First Trimester. As 4th graders, students will take a more active role in leading their conference to show ownership, responsibility, and advocate for themselves.
And additional time, we will continue to work on the skills from last week.
Blue Group
We will be spending a couple weeks covering addition and subtraction with whole numbers! We will primarily focus on equations that require quite a bit of regrouping, especially when subtracting acorss zeros. We will use base-10 blocks and virtual maniputlives, so students can concrete see why we compose and decompose place value positions. We will also work on estimating first, that way we have a target number to be close to and check the reasonableness of our answers.
Yellow Group
We will extend our learning from the first module on place value understanding to understand decimal place value. We wil work on reading and writing decimals to the thousandths using standard form, expanded form, and word form. We will always connect back to fractions to help us understand the value of the numbers we are working with.
Homework:
SS Lessons #21 and #22
LA: Mrs. Phelps
This week is short so we are wrapping up our Personal Narrative Unit and moving on to The Middle Ages! We will only have time for a breif introduction which will involve a lot of videos to help give students a mental picture the time period and frontload them before the reading instruction begins.
We are reviewing all learned morphemes in morphology and typing the final draft of our food narratives. The class requested they are all put into a shared doc once completed so they can read everyones stories (an idea I love!).
Homework: No homework!

Fourth Grade:
October is in full swing and Fourth Grade is celebrating by learning some of the spookier stories and history lessons from the Colonial era. Wednesday the students will be introduced to the Salem Witch Trials. Discussing why they happened, what likely started it, the sad end to many of the accused, and the repercussions from the trials in the United States. Early next week, we will discuss the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the story of Ichabod Crane.
We are going on a field trip to Locust Grove on Monday, October 26th! We will leave school around 8:45 on Monday morning and arrive back at 12:30. The students will tour the grounds and do a surveying activity (weather permitting) on the grounds. We will eat lunch at Locust Grove before returning to school. Permission slips come home today. Please return those as soon as possible. We need four or five volunteers to be parent chaperones on the trip. If you are interested, please email me at plovett@ascension-parish.com
