Reminders/Special Requests
Recess Equipment: We are in desperate need of a variety of balls to play with at recess. If you have any in your garage, basement, etc. that you are willing to part with, please consider donating them to our class! I know the kiddos would really appreciate having more options during recess!
Signature Sheets: Green signature sheets will be coming home this week on WEDNESDAY. Please remove all papers from your child's binder, sign the green sheet on the correct date, and put it back in their binder. They are to turn it in to me on Thursday morning. This system is used as a communication tool between home and school, and ensuring us you see your childs work, grades, and know how they are performing on tasks.
Students: Please make sure you keep track of your iPad, charger, and headphone adapter! All of these items will need to be returned at the end of the school year in the same condition they were received.
Let's work together to keep our new technology safe and in great shape all year long! 💙
What we are Learning This Week
Math: Ms. Shell
This week, we’re setting the stage for a positive and confident math mindset for the school year! 🧠➕✨ We’ll learn what brain research tells us about how we learn math and explore an important idea: there is no such thing as a “math person.” Everyone can learn math and grow their mathematical abilities—even at high levels!
Students will take part in activities that help us understand that struggle is an important part of learning, not something to avoid. When math feels challenging, our brains are working, making connections, and growing! 💪 We’ll also explore how manipulatives, pictures, drawings, and other visual models can help us make sense of math and see ideas in different ways.
Throughout the week, students will discover that there is often more than one way to see, think about, and solve a math problem. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and reflection, we’ll begin building a classroom where we feel comfortable sharing our ideas, trying different strategies, making mistakes, and learning from one another.
Our goal: Start the year believing, “I can learn math!” 🚀🔢
Homework: No Homework this week!
LA: Mrs. Phelps
Welcome back! I am so excited to begin a new year with my new 4th graders! We will spend some of this week discussing our summer reading book, The City of Ember. I am a huge fan of this book and I cannot wait to hear their thoughts. Aside from that, we will do some pre-assessments and get started on our first unit, Personal Narratives. This will be a short unit, but it includes/introduces many topics, such as, character traits, sensory details, dialogue, figurative language, and so much more. The unit is more focused on determining meaning from narratives and writing opportunities will not be lengthy.
I will begin some beginning of the year pre-assessments in spelling and morphology to help me determine to where to begin and to help me form small groups. Given time, I will also begin mClass reading assessments for the beginning of the year benchmarks.
Homework: No Homework this week!
(Summer reading assignments should be turned in no later than Friday-many have been turned in already.)
Social Studies: Mr. Lovett
The Fourth Grade theme is: “I am a founder”. We will focus on United States history and Kentucky history. We will discuss the precolonial period, the founding of the country, important documents and people, and how the United States grew and developed.
This week, I will meet the students and get to know them. We will begin discussing geography, maps, and how the environment can shape a culture and country.
