Math: Ms. Shell
Blue Group
This week, our 4th-grade mathematicians are stepping into the role of Halloween candy factory managers to solve real-world inventory challenges! Students are mastering addition and subtraction of whole numbers up to 5 digits as they track thousands of Halloween treats. Throughout this activity, students are practicing rounding to the nearest thousand to estimate total batch sizes, working through multi-column regrouping, and solving multi-step word problems—including subtracting across zeros from a 100,000-piece candy donation goal. It’s a fun, high-interest way to strengthen place value fluency and computational confidence!
Yellow Group
We will be putting their financial literacy and decimal skills to the test in a Halloween themed budget challenge! Students are researching local store websites to price out candy items while practicing essential decimal operations. They are learning to round decimal prices to the nearest whole dollar for quick estimations, add and subtract decimals to find exact totals and compare prices between stores, and multiply decimals by whole numbers when ordering multiple bags. Finally, students apply these skills to a $50.00 budget challenge, balancing multi-step decimal equations to maximize their purchases without going over budget!

Last week, we learned about the Salem Witch Trials and watched a video. This week, we will delve into the story of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Ichabod Crane. We will learn about the story, the history behind the story, and why it continues to endure over 200 years after it was written. On Wednesday, we will learn a bit about Locust Grove in preparation for our field trip next Monday. Speaking of...
We are going on a field trip to Locust Grove on Monday, October 26th! We will leave school around 8:45 on Monday morning and arrive back at 12:30. The students will tour the grounds and do a surveying activity (weather permitting) on the grounds. We will eat lunch at Locust Grove before returning to school. Permission slips came home last week. Please return those as soon as possible. We have room for a couple more parent volunteers to be chaperones on the trip. If you are interested, please email me at plovett@ascension-parish.com
