🏙️ Welcome to Our Mini City: Growing in Community and Character!

If you have heard your child talking about "Job Applications," "Paying Taxes," or "Focusing on their Own House," they are sharing the exciting launch of our classroom management and character system: The Mini City!

While we utilize a daily classroom economy to teach roles, responsibilities, and financial choices to keep our city running smoothly, our ultimate goal is much larger. We are using the idea of our classroom as a "mini-city" with roads and six distinct buildings to help our students grow into good, moral, and highly supportive citizens.

Our classroom community blueprint is anchored in Micah 6:8: “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Over the past two week, we have been exploring what this ancient wisdom looks like in a modern 4th-grade classroom through our six Mini City buildings:

⚖️ The Justice Hall (Act Justly): We learned that Fair does not mean everyone getting the exact same thing (Equal); it means everyone getting what they need to reach the shared goal (Just). We visualized this with tools like stools, wiggle seats, and umbrellas.
❤️ The Mercy Center (Love Mercy): This teaches us to shift our eyes from "What about me?" to caring about what our neighbors need to succeed. Our central motto here is: “Someone else's help does not hurt me”.
🙏 The Humility House (Walk Humbly): We discussed how we all carry "invisible backpacks" of private struggles. Since we don't always know what someone else is going through, we ask ourselves: "What might I not know?"
🏡 My Home (Not My Job): This is our dedicated space for personal responsibility. Our motto is “Focus on your own house!”—meaning we focus on watering our own garden of choices, words, and actions instead of policing or comparing ourselves to others.
🚦 The Response Center: Situated at Reflection Intersection, this hub teaches us to pause before we react to a problem and ask: "Am I helping or adding to the traffic?" We are also learning that a problem involving me, does not give me permission to cause aother problem.
🚒 The Help Station: This center maps out clear boundaries for our citizens, helping them identify when to solve a problem independently and when to "Report It" to an adult for safety.

What we are Learning This Week

Math: Ms. Shell

Math: Place Value Relationships

This week in 4th grade math, we are taking a deeper look at place value relationships and how each place is connected to the one beside it. Students are learning that when we move one place to the left, a digit becomes 10 times greater, and when we move one place to the right, it becomes 10 times smaller. We will practice comparing the same digit in different places and determining how many times greater or smaller its value is. Students will also explore renaming and regrouping numbers across different place-value units. For example, they will discover that 23 thousands is equal to 230 hundreds, 2,300 tens, or 23,000 ones. We will use visual models, place-value charts, and hands-on activities to help students understand why these relationships work—not simply memorize a rule!

Skills we are developing this week include:

Reading/Writing:

-We will continue work with reading to identify sensory details and how they create mental images in the readers mind. We will also explore what we can learn from dialogue in a story. Often we can use dialogue to make inferences about character traits, character relationships, or character feelings, based on what they say.

-We are also focusing on vocabulary this week and students will use Merriam-Webster.com to find the defitnition, part of speech, synonyms, and example sentences.

Writing:

-Write about a food memory (ex: 1st time having your favorite food, eating at your favorite resturant, or a time food made you sick) and include sensory details to show and not just tell the reader about your experience.

-include dialogue in a narrative

Morphology:

-Latin root "tract" meaning to pull or draw (ex: dis + tract = subtract which means to pull apart)

Homework: Spelling Test Friday, Sept. 18th (words will come home this week)

Social Studies: Mr. Lovett

Fourth Grade:

This week Fourth Grade will have MAP testing during Social Studies and WAG time. Students will need to bring a book, a charged iPad, headphones, and a well-rested mind with them for testing. The testing will begin on Wednesday during Social Studies and continue through Thursday into Friday if need be. Please remind the students to take their time on the MAP test and relax.

For homework, students should review the worksheets on Jamestown, Roanoke, and Plymouth. We will have a quiz next Friday (9/18).

In WAG on Tuesday we will discuss possessive nouns and do a worksheet in class.
