Cooler days are here! 🍂 Please remind your child(ren) to bring a cozy coat or wear pants to school. We’ll be heading outside for brain breaks, recess, and fresh air unless it’s raining or freezing. Let’s keep everyone warm and ready for outdoor fun! ❄️🧥
Important Reminder:
We will send home graded/completed work on Wednesdays. There will be a sheet for you to sign weekly showing that you have seen (and removed) all of their work. Forms from the office will also be included. Students have labeled the front pocket in their binder "Take Home".
Grandparents Day
Skills we are developing this week include:
Reading:
RI.5.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text (reading for the "gist")
Topics covered: artistic techniques used during the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci's works and accomplishments
Writing:
W.5.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources to serve as evidence; summarize or paraphrase information in notes
Grammar:
L. 5. 1d 1d. Recognize and correct inappropriate shifts in verb tense (subject-linking verb agreement)
Morphology:
accurately read multisyllabic words with the prefixes im- and in- out of context
Our overall reading goals will be to develop an understanding of reading for purposes such as gist, explanation, details, and inferences.
Homework: Final typed persuasive DQ essay completed and printed or shared with Mrs. Phelps
(some are completed already, therefore those students have no homework this week)
Math: Mrs. Bennett
5th Grade – Yellow Group
Building on last week’s work with writing and evaluating expressions, the Yellow Group will now focus on how grouping numbers using parentheses can change the value of an expression. Students will explore how different groupings can lead to very different answers, even when the same numbers and operations are used. For example, in the expression 8 + 4 × 3, we must follow the order of operations and multiply first, giving us 8 + 12 = 20. However, if we change the grouping to (8 + 4) × 3, students will solve the addition first to get 12, and then multiply to get 36. Through examples like this, students will see how parentheses tell us exactly what to solve first and why careful grouping is important in mathematics. This helps deepen their understanding of how expressions work and strengthens their ability to reason mathematically.
5th Grade – Blue Group
Building off last work, students will now begin applying this understanding to solve a variety of fraction-by-whole-number problems. They will use tape diagrams and drawings to represent situations and make sense of what it means to take a fraction of a quantity. For example, when solving 1/4 × 8, students will model 1/4 of 8 by partitioning the whole into four equal parts and identifying one of those parts. Through continued use of manipulatives and visual models, students will strengthen their understanding of how multiplication with fractions can represent both equal groups and scaling. They will also begin to notice patterns in their work and explain their thinking as they move toward more efficient strategies.
Homework:
SS #65
SS #66
HMH Sheet Due Friday (Yellow groups is on HMH - did not have a printable version)
SS Quiz Friday (did not have last Friday due to field trip - taking it this Friday)
Social Studies: Mrs. Crush
Students will continue researching a topic related to Social Studies and preparing a Google Slides presentation. This is a collaborative project with Social Studies and Technology. Students will present to their classmates at the end of the project.
We are also continuing our learning about Ancient China and how geography helped shape one of the world’s earliest civilizations. Students are exploring how the Yellow River supported farming and early settlements, leading to the development of organized societies and dynasties. We are also discussing how Chinese rulers governed, the role of religion and traditions, and important achievements and inventions that influenced Chinese culture and the wider world. Through this unit, students are learning how geography, government, and culture all worked together to shape life in Ancient China.
Religion: Mrs. Crush
Majority of students completed the "Saint Planning Guide" (rough draft) for their Saint Cereal Box Project last week. Students will spend this week creating their cereal box projects, which will be finished by the end of their Religion Class on Thursday, March 26.
*If I feel the student will not be able to complete their Saint Cereal Box Project during Wednesday and Thursday's Religion Class, I will notify the parent(s) via email on Tuesday afternoon to complete part of it at home that will be due the following day.
With permission from Father Matthew, the projects will be displayed in the AMR (Adult Meeting Room) across from the church from March 27–29, and families are welcome to stop by during the Fish Fry or after Mass to see them.
Students will also participate in a Saints Madness bracket, where saints advance based on questions created from the information on each cereal box. After the project, families may choose to donate the cereal box or take it home. Thank you for your support! Looking forward to seeing their final products!
Important Announcements:
Saint Cereal Box Project Due by the end of class on Thursday, March 26.
3rd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 3rd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, May 13. This will be completed on Google Classroom. Optional: complete log on paper.
Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
