Math - SS #47 and SS #48
This week we will spend a couple days doing a brief review of grammar and morphology terms from unit 2. We will also take the reading comprehension assessment in 2 sessions. Then we will celebrate the end of our animal classification unit with some animal themed snacks and a movie. If we have time, we will begin our next unit, The Human Body.
The Human Body: Systems and Senses is our next unit and I am very excited! It is challenging but so very interesting. In second grade, the class had a unit titled The Human Body: Building Blocks and Nutrition. Prior knowledge plays an essential role in reading comprehension. Not only does it help when making inferences, for example, but also with understanding more content specific vocabulary.
Homework: Reading comprehension test Thursday/Friday (split into 2 days)
(There is no need to study for the reading comprehension portion. Friday, we will complete the part with morphology and grammar. They will want to be sure to review nouns, verbs, and adjectives are, as well as, study their morphology card set. This should live in their binder or cubby.)
Parts of Speech Review Song:
In math this week, we will spend time transitioning back into routine after break! As part of our transition back into learning, students will also participate in a “Would You Rather?” math activity. In this game, students are presented with two choices and must decide which option they prefer—but the key is that they must justify their choice using math. Students will solve problems, compare quantities, estimate, and explain using reasoning. There is no single “right” answer; instead, the focus is on how students think and communicate their mathematical reasoning. For example, "Would you rather play outside for 1/4 of an hour or 20 minutes?"
Students will then use Pic Collage to create math posters that showcases how they used math over the break! These posters will have visuals and captions that helps students recognize, even though school stopped, math didn’t. We’re going to look at how math showed up in their life—without worksheets or tests, for example when we travel, play games, build with Lego, cook, play sports, use time, and technology.
Homework: 1/5 - 1/9
We are easing back into things, and will have a light homework load this week! We will have a Simple Solutions Quiz next Friday 1/16.
SS 47
SS 48
In Social Studies, the students will continue their assignment on the the story, Letting Swift River Go by Jane Yolen. In this lesson, Students will be able to:
Explain how the building of the Quabbin Reservoir changed the lives of the people in the Swift River Valley.
Identify reasons why communities might need to move or relocate.
Describe how different groups of people can be affected when human settlement changes.
To go along with the story, students will choose one of the following assignments. This will be completed in class. *See below images.
We will begin Ch. 7 "God's Faithfulness and Our Unfaithfulness" in our Word of Life workbook. In this chapter, students will:
understand that even when Israel complained and was unfaithful, God was faithful to His covenant.
know that the Ten Commandments help them grow in virtue and avoid vice.
understand that when the Kingdom of Israel, established by God, failed to be faithful to their covenant with God, they were divided and driven into exile.
Words to Know: idol, vice, Kingdom of Israel
Important Announcements:
2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, February 11. This will be completed on Google Classroom. Optional: complete log on paper.
Altar Serving Training:
Some of our 3rd graders participated in Altar Server Training last week with Father Matthew! If your child would like to begin serving at weekend Masses, please reach out to Patrick Parris at pparris@ascension-parish.com. Patrick will help get them set up with Mass times and dates.
As for school Mass, 3rd graders will begin serving after Christmas. At that time, I will pair them with an experienced server so they can learn and practice alongside them. Students will be notified about a week in advance if they are scheduled to serve during a school Mass.
I’m looking forward to seeing our 3rd graders begin serving at weekend Masses—it’s such a wonderful way for them to be involved in our parish community!
Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
