Skills we will be working on this week are:

Reading:

identify the themes of the story and explain how characters’ actions demonstrate specific story themes (hospitality, friendship, responsibility, irresponsibility)
ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for their answers

Speaking/ Listening:

determine the main idea and supporting details of a text read aloud
recount a story listening carefully to act out a character’s actions and feelings
describe how characters in a Read-Aloud demonstrate the story’s theme of hospitality

Language/Foundational Skills:

use syllabication to break written words into syllables
identify open, closed, magic e, and vowel team syllables (reading and writing words with long and short vowels)

Homework: Fluency passage- read out loud to an adult at least 4 times within the week. Turn in NEXT MONDAY 9/8 with parent initials.

(After mClass reading assessments are complete, some students will be receiving these weekly. They will come home every Wednesday along with the green sheets . However, since this is a short week, we will all complete one this week.)

Math-Mrs. Bennett

Our 3rd grade class is beginning to build a strong foundation in multiplication! Students are learning to connect repeated addition, equal groups, and arrays as different ways to visualize multiplication. We are practicing how to take a repeated addition sentence (like 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4) and write it as a multiplication sentence (5 × 4). Students are also learning that the first factor represents the number of groups and the second factor represents how many are in each group. Families can support this learning at home by pointing out real-life examples of multiplication, such as “There are 6 chairs at each table and 4 tables in the room—how many chairs are there in all?” A simple way to practice is by having your child help set the table: ask them to place forks, plates, or cups for each family member, then count the total using repeated addition or multiplication. These hands-on activities help students see how multiplication is used in everyday life.

Simple Solutions Quiz Update:

This year, students will take a Simple Solutions quiz bi-weekly, which means they will have two quizzes each month. Each quiz will consist of 15 questions that align with the homework they have completed that week—some even identical to the homework questions! Students will receive a quiz sheet with 15 boxes to show their work and answer the questions, just like their homework. The quizzes will be graded out of 15 points. We will grade the homework in class, giving students the opportunity to discuss any questions or review their work together before the quiz. The graded quizzes will come home the following Wednesday, so please be sure to review your child's work to help support their math understanding at home!

Social Studies- Mrs. Crush

We will be taking the MAP Test: Language Usage majority of this week.

We will continue this week in Social Studies delving into our civic standards. The students will work on:

Explaining the basic purposes and functions of different governing bodies.
Comparing how diverse societies maintain order, safety, and enforce rules and laws.
Examining civic virtues and democratic principles across various world communities.
Understanding how processes, rules, and laws influence governance and problem-solving in diverse communities.

Religion- Mrs. Crush

We will be taking the MAP Test: Language Usage majority of this week.

We will continue with Chapter 1: The Invitation to Communion. This chapter will help students:

Understand that God calls each of us to be in communion with Him.
Recognize that the Bible reveals God to us.
Learn about Jesus Christ as the Word of God who perfectly reveals God’s message.
Discover the meaning of character.
Know how to look up passages in the Bible.

Important Announcements:

Chapter Test: Ch. 1 Test is TBD*. *Students will be taking the Language Usage section of the MAP test next week, which will push the Ch.1 test until later.

*Items to study: Ch.1 Review (in Word of Life workbook), vocabulary words (these will be inside their binders), and highlighted text.

1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, October 29. This will be complete on Google Classroom.

Blessings in a Backpack

Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
