This week in math class we are beginning our next math chapter focused on understanding fractions as numbers. In this unit, students will learn that fractions represent quantities—not just parts of shapes. They will explore how fractions can be placed on a number line, use pattern blocks and fraction bars to visualize fractions, and understand the meaning of the numerator and denominator. This work lays an important foundation for future fraction concepts and helps students think more flexibly about numbers.
Due to the number of recent snow days, we will not be taking a formal area and perimeter test. Instead, we will move forward with new content to make the most of our instructional time. Students have completed multiple FACTS assignments on area and perimeter, which already provide sufficient evidence of their understanding of those skills.

We will be MAP Testing this week.
In Social Studies, we are starting a new until on economics. This week we will be focusing on how producers and consumers interact to determine the prices of goods and services in markets. We will also describe the relationship between supply and demand. Students will read the book, Who's Buying? Who's Selling? Understanding Consumers and Producers on Epic. See image for Class Code.
For Religion, we will be focusing on our saint of the month, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton! It's very special that we learn about her with it also being Catholic Schools Week. She is the first American born saint and also started the first Catholic school. Each student was given a packet with activities to learn more about her. See the NTI 3rd Grade Google Slide for the activities to be completed each day.

2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, February 11. This will be completed on Google Classroom. Optional: complete log on paper.

Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
