Presents for a Purpose
Field Trip: Tuesday, December 16, 2025, 8:30-11:30
Students will need to be in uniform for the Field Trip. They may wear Christmas Accessories if they'd like. They will need to bring their lunch as we will return after the start time of our assigned lunch time.
Lastly, please make sure to eat a hearty breakfast as we will be volunteering during our field trip.
This field trip will count as one of their experiences for the 2nd Trimester Service Hours.
I hope you and your families enjoy a wonderful and restful break filled with time together. It has truly been a blessing to teach your children, and I am grateful for the joy they bring to our classroom each day!

Cooler days are here! 🍂 Please remind your child(ren) to bring a cozy coat or wear pants to school. We’ll be heading outside for brain breaks, recess, and fresh air unless it’s raining or freezing. Let’s keep everyone warm and ready for outdoor fun! ❄️🧥
Important Reminder:
We will send home graded/completed work on Wednesdays. There will be a sheet for you to sign weekly showing that you have seen (and removed) all of their work. Forms from the office will also be included. Students have labeled the front pocket in their binder "Take Home".
3-5th Christmas Program
Reading:
We have 3 class periods this week. It is our last week learning about Muhammad Ali. We will continue to learn about his 6 core principles: Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect and Spirituality and how they are evident throughout his life. We will be reading excerpts from his memoir, newspaper articles, and quotes to learn more about this Louisville native who spent his life fighting for more than a gold medal. We will be combining what we have learned by compiling a collection of symbols and creating word clouds with words to represent Ali. This will be utilized later in an art project with Mrs. Stettler. I am excited to announce we will be taking a field trip to the Muhammad Ali Center in March!
We are also completing one on one mClass reading assessments this week and you can expect to receive results following Christmas break. Have a wonderful Christmas, everyone!
Writing:
Students will complete daily written reflections related to our lesson for the day
Grammar:
Comma rules- Review using commas for introductory words, tag questions, a direct address, and appositives
Homework: Vocabulary quiz moved to Thursday, December 17th + comma rules
*Words: Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect and Spirituality
Math: Mrs. Bennett
Blue Group
This week we are wrapping up our unit on decimal place value. Students spent time going over rounding decimals at the end of last week, so we will lastly review multiplying decimals by powers of ten. This will strengthen our understanding of decimal relationships, including how finding one-tenth of a number or ten times a number shifts digits to the right or left on the place value chart. Students will take a test on decimal place value understanding Thursday 12/18. They have access to a study guide (we will work on this in class some).
The following skills will be on the test:
Read and Write Decimals (word form, expanded form, standard form)
Converting Decimals to Fractions
Comparing and Ordering Decimals
Rounding (nearest whole, ,tenth, hundredth, and thousandth)
Yellow Group
In math, students are learning how to divide by non-unit fractions (fractions with a numerator other than 1, such as 2/3 or 3/4). We are focusing on understanding what the division means, not just memorizing a rule. For example, imagine you have 3 cups of flour and each batch of muffins needs 3/4 cup of flour. How many batches can you make? To solve this, students will think about how many groups of 3/4 cup fit into 3 cups. One helpful strategy is to use a visual model or rewrite the problem using multiplication: 3 ÷ 3/4 = 3 × 4/3
Students will use models, number lines, and real-life contexts like cooking, measuring, and sharing to make sense of why the math works. This helps build a deeper understanding and confidence with fraction division.
*We are not ready for a chapter test on this chapter yet (like the blue group) so it will be a couple weeks after Christmas Break.*
Homework:
This week students will have two Simple Solutions lessons. Like November, they will continue to have 3 Reflex sessions per week as part of their homework leading up to Christmas break. Maintaining this routine is essential, as it helps us stay on track to meet our goal of achieving full fluency through the 10s by the end of 4th grade. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting strong math habits at home!
Homework: 12/15 - 12/19
SS 45
SS 46
3 Reflex Sessions (use Reflex calendar to help track!)
Social Studies: Mrs. Crush
With our Snow Day and Delay, we will begining studying a new ancient civilization when we return from Christmas Break.
Religion: Mrs. Crush
We will complete our lesson on the Season of Advent, in our Word of Life workbooks. In this liturgical season, students will learn that Jesus taught us to prepare for His Second Coming by keeping watch and praying, that the liturgical actions of the Church during Advent fill us with anticipation for the fullness and joy of Christmas, and learn the significance of the "O Antiphons." In class, students will be assigned a feast day during Advent to research and present to the class. They will be creating a wreath that is decorated with objects, colors, and symbols that present key aspects of the feast day they have researched.
Important Announcements:
2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, February 11. This will be completed on Google Classroom. Optional: complete log on paper.
Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
