What we are Learning This Week
Math: Mrs. Bennett
In 4th grade math, we are beginning to learn the steps of long division! To build a strong foundation, students are first using base-ten blocks to model the division process in a concrete way. This helps them physically see how numbers are grouped and shared before moving to the standard algorithm. As we transition to paper and pencil, students record each step carefully on graph paper to keep their work organized and to better understand why each number is placed where it is. Long division can be a challenging skill, but our focus is on understanding the why behind each step—not just memorizing a procedure—so students develop a deep and lasting understanding of the concept.
Homework: 2/23 - 2/27
SS #57
SS #58
Division Worksheet (we are working on this in class too!)
*All due Friday*
LA: Mrs. Phelps
Last week I really enjoyed celebrating Black History Month and learning about significant African Americans who impacted history. We will still be taking a break from starting a new Amplify unit this week as well because I will be out on Wednesday and Thursday. Therefore, we will work on a very important reading comprehension skill, inferencing. We will read a variety of literary and informational texts to practice this skill. This is something we actually do all day long, reading or not, and it is important to be aware of how we come to certain conclusions. As readers, we need to be able to "read between the lines" to understand what an author is not explicitly telling us.
Skills we will be developing weekly include:
Reading:
RL.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text
Morphology:
Latin root port meaning "to carry, gate, or entry"
Grammar:
homophones- there vs. their vs. they're
Homework: No homework this week!
Social Studies: Mrs. Crush
This week, Mr. Mullaney will be coming in and students will be interviewing them on one particular county that they studied and everyone learns more about that county.
We are also continue working in our state postcard exchange! We have already received several postcards from around the country and will be mailing ours out soon as well.
Religion: Mrs. Crush
For Religion, we will continue Ch. 8 "God Reveals His Name" in our Word of Life workbook. In this chapter, students will:
know that God revealed His name to Moses by speaking to him in the burning bush.
know that God's name reveals God's identity to His people.
understand that God revealed the Ten Commandments to the Israelites.
begin to understand that God reveals some moral laws that we can know through our own reason and experience to lead us to true happiness and freedom.
Words to Know: vain, Yahweh
Important Announcements:

Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
