Important Reminders:
Take Home Sheet:
We will send home graded/completed work on Wednesdays. There will be a sheet for you to sign weekly showing that you have seen (and removed) all of their work. Forms from the office will also be included. Students have labeled the front pocket in their binder "Take Home".
Ipads:
Students are expected to come to school with their iPads charged to 80% or higher. We’ve noticed several students arriving with batteries under 20%, which requires charging during class and interrupts learning. If a student comes to school three or more days in a week below 80%, they will receive a written assignment and will not be able to take their iPad home. This may result in incomplete work if they cannot access their homework. Please help your child come prepared each day to ensure a smooth and productive learning experience! Thank you!
Skills we are developing this week include:
Reading:
RI.5.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text (reading for the "gist")
RI.5.3 Explain the relationship between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts based on specific evidence from the text
Topics covered: Michelangelo and Raphael's artistic achievements, patrons of the arts
Writing:
W.5.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources to serve as evidence; summarize or paraphrase information in notes
review structure of a paragraph and draft a paragraph about how Michelangelo's work embodies the spirit of the Renaissance
Grammar:
L. 5. 1d 1d. Recognize and correct inappropriate shifts in verb tense (subject-linking verb agreement)
Morphology:
accurately read multisyllabic words with the prefixes im- and in- out of context
Our overall reading goals will be to develop an understanding of reading for purposes such as gist, explanation, details, and inferences.
Homework: Readworks Article posted on Google Classroom due by Friday
This past week I had the pleasure to do a lot of fun things with 5th grade! Our field trip to the Ali Center was awesome and the students were so appreciative for the opportunity to go. In our learning about the Renaissance, we were able to take a gallery walk of Leonardo da Vinci's various works and practice drawing using one point perspective, a technique that became popular during this time period. I love having new esxperiences with this group. They are so special.

5th Grade – Yellow Group
This week, our yellow group will begin working on writing and evaluating algebraic expressions. Students will practice translating real-world word problems into algebraic expressions and then simplifying those expressions by combining like terms. We will continue building on prior knowledge by incorporating grouping symbols and exponents, with a strong focus on correctly interpreting and solving expressions that include nested grouping symbols (such as parentheses within brackets). This work helps students strengthen both their problem-solving skills and their understanding of how mathematical expressions represent real situations.
5th Grade – Blue Group
Our blue group will be focusing on multiplying fractions and developing a conceptual understanding of what it means to find a part of a part. Using examples like 1/4 × 1/6, students will explore how multiplying fractions results in a smaller product and why that makes sense in real-world contexts. Through hands-on models and real-life scenarios, students will see how taking a fraction of another fraction scales the amount down. This approach helps build a deeper understanding of fraction multiplication beyond just the procedure.

HMH Sheet Due Friday (Yellow groups is on HMH - did not have a printable version)
Social Studies: Mrs. Crush
Students will be completing their research on their assigned topic. Students will be given feedback on their Google Slides and will start presenting their topics when we return from Spring Break.
DUE DATE: Wednesday, April 1, 2026
We are also continuing our learning about Ancient China and how geography helped shape one of the world’s earliest civilizations. Students are exploring how the Yellow River supported farming and early settlements, leading to the development of organized societies and dynasties. We are also discussing how Chinese rulers governed, the role of religion and traditions, and important achievements and inventions that influenced Chinese culture and the wider world. Through this unit, students are learning how geography, government, and culture all worked together to shape life in Ancient China.
Religion: Mrs. Crush
I'm so proud of all the students coming together to research their saints and creating clever cereal covers for their Saint Cereal Box Project. They did a fabulous job! Thank you everyone who came to see them!
This week, students will participate in a Saints Madness bracket, where saints advance based on questions created from the information on each cereal box. We will most likely have to complete when we return from Spring Break.
Important Announcements:
3rd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 3rd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, May 13. This will be completed on Google Classroom. Optional: complete log on paper.
Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
