In 3rd grade math, students are learning that whole numbers can also be expressed as fractions. For example, when the denominator is 3, fractions such as 3/3, 6/3, and 9/3 represent whole numbers because they are made up of complete groups of thirds. Students are using fraction circles to physically build these fractions and see that 3/3 equals one whole, 6/3 equals two wholes, and 9/3 equals three wholes. This hands-on modeling helps them understand that a fraction is not always “less than one,” but instead represents a number made up of equal parts.
In addition to using manipulatives, students are drawing visual models to show their thinking and writing equations to connect the visual to the numerical representation (for example, 6/3 = 2). Through this work, students are beginning to recognize important patterns: when the numerator is a multiple of the denominator, the fraction represents a whole number. They are also discovering that any whole number can be written as a fraction by placing that number over 1 (such as 4/1) or by creating equivalent fractions like 4 = 8/2 or 12/3. By focusing on these patterns and models, students are building a deeper understanding of how whole numbers and fractions are connected.

Students will come to school dressed as their president. Please use items you already have at home. There is no need to purchase anything special.
Presentations will take place in two sessions, with a short break in between. Students are not listed in any order.

**Last week, we hid the slides that the students will not be presenting.
Students should be very familiar with these slides and aim to present without reading directly from the screen. The slides are meant to serve as a guide.
Students will practice presenting during Social Studies class on Monday, February 23. Please have your child practice presenting to you at home as well.
For Religion, we will be practicing using Google Slides by creating our next Student Led Prayer reflecting on Lent and our Lenten Promises. Mrs. Crush will model an example with the students during class on Tuesday and Wednesday. Students who do not finish after our class on Wednesday, will be asked to complete for homework. The goal is to continue to strengthen their skills using Google Slides, properly citing the website, and reflecting on their Lenten Promises.
Later in the week, we will begin Ch.9 "Jesus and the Kingdom of God" in our Word of Life workbook. In this chapter, students will:
begin to understand that we must be baptized to enter into communion with God.
recognize that Jesus came to establish the Kingdom of God-the reign, or rule, of God.
begin to grasp that only by accepting God's graces can they enter the Kingdom of God.
know that Jesus founded the Church as the beginning of the Kingdom of God on earth.

3rd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 3rd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, May 13. This will be completed on Google Classroom. Optional: complete log on paper.
Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
