Math - No Homework Due to MAP Testing
The Human Body: Systems and Senses is our next unit and I am very excited! It is challenging but so very interesting. In second grade, the class had a unit titled The Human Body: Building Blocks and Nutrition. Prior knowledge plays an essential role in reading comprehension. Not only does it help when making inferences, for example, but also with understanding more content specific vocabulary.
Skills we are developing this week include:
Reading:
RI.3.1 Use text evidence and support to ask and answer questions about a text or topic
RI.3.2 Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea
RI.3.3 Describe the connections between ideas, concepts, or a series of events using temporal language and/or cause and effect
**Topics we will cover while developing these skills include: skeletal system, axial bones, and appendicular bones
Foundational Skills:
irregular plurals (ex: regular- box/boxes vs. irregular- tooth/teeth)
Morphology:
review all learned prefixes and suffixes using our 3 part drill
Writing:
W.3.2 Identify the parts of an informational paragraph (topic sentence, supporting details, conclusion)
respond to a writing prompt including topic and concluding statements

This week in math class we are focusing on the Math MAP test! We will test a bit each day and then brain breaks to relieve any stress and move our bodies after focusing for longer period of times! I am eager to see your child's growth and progress so far this year!
We are wrapping up our current chapter and ready for a chapter test. However, due to Math MAP testing, we will not take the chapter test until after the Reading and Math MAP tests are complete. This gives students plenty of time to review, practice, and prepare without added pressure during standardized testing. A study guide is posted to Google Classroom, but there is a copy included here as well. You may print it or use Google Slides to work through it with your child at home. Thank you for your continued support! I am thinking we will test on Wednesday 1/28.

In Social Studies, the students will complete their assignment on the the story, Letting Swift River Go by Jane Yolen. In this lesson, Students will be able to:
Explain how the building of the Quabbin Reservoir changed the lives of the people in the Swift River Valley.
Identify reasons why communities might need to move or relocate.
Describe how different groups of people can be affected when human settlement changes.
To go along with the story, students will choose one of the following assignments. This will be completed in class. *See below images.

We will complete Ch. 7 "God's Faithfulness and Our Unfaithfulness" in our Word of Life workbook. In this chapter, students will:
understand that even when Israel complained and was unfaithful, God was faithful to His covenant.
know that the Ten Commandments help them grow in virtue and avoid vice.
understand that when the Kingdom of Israel, established by God, failed to be faithful to their covenant with God, they were divided and driven into exile.

Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
