What we are Learning This Week
Math: Mrs. Bennett
I am excited to get back into the swing of things now that I’ve returned from maternity leave! Thank you all for your support during this transition—it’s wonderful to be back in the classroom with your children. To get started, students will complete a chapter check-in covering the skills taught while I was away. This check-in is not for a grade, but it will give me a clear picture of where students are in their understanding so I can determine what we may need to review before moving forward. The results will guide our instruction over the next three weeks. Students who are ready to progress will jump into our next unit on Understanding Angles, an engaging topic that incorporates a fun, hands-on project!
As we return to our regular routines, students will have two Simple Solutions lessons a week. Like November, they will continue to have 3 Reflex sessions per week as part of their homework leading up to Christmas break. Maintaining this routine is essential, as it helps us stay on track to meet our goal of achieving full fluency through the 10s by the end of 4th grade. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting strong math habits at home!

Social Studies: Mrs. Crush
Students have begun working on their Kentucky County Project. Each student has been assigned a cluster of counties in Kentucky to research as they learn about different regions of our state. This project will be completed in both Social Studies and Technology.
We are also participating in a state postcard exchange! We have already received several postcards from around the country and will be mailing ours out soon as well.
Religion: Mrs. Crush
We will begin our lessons on the liturgical season of Advent. Each week, we will focus on how we prepare our hearts for the Birth of Christ. Students will also receive a “Countdown to Christmas” with simple daily ways to show kindness, help others, and be present in the moment. This will be placed in their binder. Please check in with your child periodically to see how they are doing.
Important Announcements:
2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, February 11. This will be completed on Google Classroom. Optional: complete log on paper.
Science: Mrs. Jackel
Altar Serving Training:
Our 4th graders participated in Altar Server Training last week with Father Matthew! If your child would like to begin serving at weekend Masses, please reach out to Patrick Parris at pparris@ascension-parish.com. Patrick will help get them set up with Mass times and dates. *Please note only those who have received their First Holy Communion are able to altar serve.
As for school Mass, 4th graders will continue serving after Christmas. At that time, I will pair them with an experienced server so they can learn and practice alongside them. Students will be notified about a week in advance if they are scheduled to serve during a school Mass.
I’m looking forward to seeing our 4th graders begin serving at weekend Masses—it’s such a wonderful way for them to be involved in our parish community!
Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
