We are wrapping up our poetry unit this week and will take the end of unit assessment with at the end of this week or next. This does not include any grammar or morphology, but will include the following skills:
-labeling rhyme scheme
-summarizing stanzas
-interpreting figurative language
-using text evidence to answer questions
Reading:
identify parallel structure in poetry and analyze its use to compare and contrast scenes
analyze a poem and identify poetic devices such as personification and extended simile
Writing:
Daily writing opportunities this week involve the following:
write a poem in parallel structure
apply learned poetry skills to compose a final, original, ars poetica (a poem about the craft of poetry)
write a collaborative poem with a partner on a specified topic
Morphology:
Latin base aud meaning "to hear or listen"
Latin base cred meaning "to believe"
Homework: Make sure at least one completed poem is typed in our poetry collection on google classroom (many students have done this already)
Math: Mrs. Bennett
Blue Group:
This week in math, we are diving into decimal place value! Students are learning to read, write, and represent decimals in standard form, word form, and expanded form. For example, the decimal 4.56 can be written as:
Standard form: 4.56
Word form: four and fifty-six hundredths
Expanded form: (4 x 1) + (5 x 1/10) + (6 x 1/100)
We’ll also be comparing decimals to determine which is greater or less than another (for example, 0.7 > 0.65). Students are discovering how important it is to line up the decimal points and compare digits by place value, just like they do with whole numbers. Understanding decimals is an essential skill because decimals appear everywhere in real life — when dealing with money, measurements, and data. By mastering decimal place value, students build a strong foundation for future math topics like fractions, operations with decimals, and percentages.
Yellow Group:
This group is working on multiplying mixed numbers. Students will first learn how to convert mixed numbers into improper fractions to make multiplication easier. They will also practice cross-reducing before multiplying to simplify their work and find the most efficient solution. Throughout the week, we’ll explore real-world scenarios that involve multiplying fractions, such as finding the area of a garden, scaling a recipe, or determining part of a part. Since it can sometimes be tricky to know when to multiply fractions, we’ll focus on understanding the context of each problem to decide why multiplication makes sense. Our goal is for students to see the connection between the numbers and the situation, not just the steps!
Homework Both Groups: 11/10 - 11/14

3 Reflex Sessions (Green Light)
Students were given a calendar for November to track their Reflex sessions. They are required to complete a minimum of 3 sessions a week (Monday - Sunday.) When they complete a session, they will fill in the date of completion on their tracker. I will collect these upon my return!
*All due Friday 11/14
Mrs. Bennett Maternity Leave
Dear Families,
As many of you know, my daughter was born at the end of last school year. It has been such a joy becoming a mom, and I am incredibly grateful to be able to continue teaching, while being a mom, and have thoroughly enjoyed having Folly right down the hall! After much thought, I’ve decided to take a short maternity leave to have some special quality at home with her. I will be out for 15 school days in November.
I want to reassure you that our class will continue to grow, learn, and be challenged in all the best ways. I will still be writing all of the lesson plans myself while I’m away. Each week, I will review what the students are learning, how they are doing on key skills, and adjust the next week’s plans to meet their needs—just as I do now. Your child’s education will remain thoughtful, rigorous, and full of high expectations and support.
For homework during this time, students will complete the following assignments weekly:
Simple Solutions lessons
3 Reflex sessions per week
Students will receive a November calendar to help track their weekly Reflex sessions. I will collect and review their weekly Reflex sessions when I return, and give students a grade for completion. Students will grade their Simple Solutions homework every Friday, and have oppurtunity to ask questions or for help!
Thank you so much for your support, understanding, and partnership. I am truly grateful to work with such wonderful students and families. I will miss the class very much, but I am also excited to spend this special time with my daughter—and I look forward to returning in December with lots of stories and energy!
With gratitude,
Mrs. Bennett
