Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps

Skills we will be working on this week are:

Reading:

identify the themes of the story and explain how characters’ actions demonstrate specific story themes (hospitality, friendship, responsibility, irresponsibility)

Speaking/ Listening:

determine the main idea and supporting details of a text read aloud
recount a story listening carefully to act out a character’s actions and feelings

Language/Foundational Skills:

use syllabication to break written words into syllable
review short vowel sounds and multisyllable words.

Morphology:

Students will learn what morphology means and how we will apply it while reading to help us better understand new words.

Technically, morphology is "the study of the form of words". We will learn the meaning of specific prefixes and suffixes, as well as some Greek and Latin bases and how they can aid in our comprehension when reading new and challenging texts.

Writing:

Students will write collaboratively to produce an alternative ending to a story. [W.3.3]

Homework: Activity p. 2.1-2.2 (Read passage and answer 4 questions in complete sentences): Due Friday

Math-Mrs. Bennett

We are excited to get start our second full week in math class! We are continuing to get organized and learn our new routines. This week we will learn our warm-up routine: Calendar Math to promote rich, deep conversations around math. We will start our by creating a number line where we will add the number of days we have been in school. We will then discuss which numbers are multiples of two and mark each of those with an oval. We will create equations to go with our counting tape, such as (4 x 2) + 1 to show that the number 9 is made up of 4 groups or 2, plus one more, which is why it is considered an odd number. This counting tape will build overtime as we begin to mark other multiples as well. We will spend this week continuing to get to know one another, assessing students' prior knowledge, and starting to work on our first Module- Understand Multiplication.

Homework:

We are starting homework this week. Students should complete one Simple Solutions lesson a night. The assigned lessons are listed below. We will check/grade our homework every Friday, so students have the opportunity to ask questions and review problems as needed. We will take a SS Quiz biweekly on Friday, starting this week. The quiz questions correspond to the homework, which is why students should take their time when completing a lesson and have an adult check over their work nightly. The homework is never counted as a letter grade, but the quizzes will be included in their Trimester averages.

*Students may work ahead in their books, but please ensure to only work a few lessons ahead. This will help ensure the material on their homework align with the material on the Friday quiz.

Social Studies- Mrs. Crush

We will continue this week in Social Studies delving into our civic standards. The students began working on taking notes last week and will continue this week. They will work on:

Explaining the basic purposes and functions of different governing bodies.
Comparing how diverse societies maintain order, safety, and enforce rules and laws.
Examining civic virtues and democratic principles across various world communities.
Understanding how processes, rules, and laws influence governance and problem-solving in diverse communities.

Religion- Mrs. Crush

Students will continue working on their student-led prayers, which will occur at the start of each class. We will continue with Chapter 1: The Invitation to Communion. This chapter will help students:

Understand that God calls each of us to be in communion with Him.
Recognize that the Bible reveals God to us.
Learn about Jesus Christ as the Word of God who perfectly reveals God’s message.
Discover the meaning of character.
Know how to look up passages in the Bible.

Important Announcements:

Student-Led Prayers: Student-led prayers are due Friday, August 29*. Students will work on these during class on Thursday and Friday. No need to work on them Monday evening. Each student will have the opportunity to present their prayer at the beginning of class. *Students will continue to work on them this week during class. If not finished in class on Thursday**, students will complete for homework. I'll make sure those students who haven't finished, will write it down in their Student Agendas. **Updated on 9/27.
Chapter One Test: Ch. 1 Test is TBD*. *Students will be taking the Language Usage section of the MAP test next week, which will push the Ch.1 test until later.

*Items to study: Ch.1 Review (in Word of Life workbook), vocabulary words (these will be inside their binders), and highlighted text.

1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, October 29. This will be complete on Google Classroom.
