Cooler days are here! 🍂 Please remind your child(ren) to bring a cozy coat or wear pants to school. We’ll be heading outside for brain breaks, recess, and fresh air unless it’s raining or freezing. Let’s keep everyone warm and ready for outdoor fun! ❄️🧥
Important Reminder:
We will send home graded/completed work on Wednesdays. There will be a sheet for you to sign weekly showing that you have seen (and removed) all of their work. Forms from the office will also be included. Students have labeled the front pocket in their binder "Take Home".
We will be spending the next few weeks of December learning about Muhammad Ali. A couple years ago, my husband and I attended the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards. I was so inspired by the spirit of Muhammad Ali and the impact he had on the world and our city. This week we start with an introduction to who he is as a boxer, artist, and activist. We will learn about his 6 core principles: Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect and Spirituality. We will be reading excerpts from his memoir, articles, quotes, and poems to learn more about this Louisville native who spent his life fighting for more than a gold medal.
Writing:
Students will complete daily written reflections related to our lesson for the day
Morphology:

Thank you to everyone who attended the 4th and 5th Grade Poetry Slam. I am so impressed with all of these young poets and the courage it took to read in front of so many adults and friends.
My face hurt from smiling! I will post the link to the recording when I receive it.

I am excited to get back into the swing of things now that I’ve returned from maternity leave! Thank you all for your support during this transition—it’s wonderful to be back in the classroom with your children. To get started, students will complete a chapter check-in covering the skills taught while I was away. This check-in is not for a grade, but it will give me a clear picture of where students are in their understanding so I can determine what we may need to review before moving forward. The results will guide our instruction over the next three weeks. Blue group students who are ready to progress, will jump into our next unit on add/subtract fractions with unlike denominators. As for the yellow group, these students will start to work on understating division of whole numbers and unit fractions.
As we return to our regular routines, students will have two Simple Solutions lessons a week. Like November, they will continue to have 3 Reflex sessions per week as part of their homework leading up to Christmas break. Maintaining this routine is essential, as it helps us ensure we meet our goal of full mastery of multiplication/division facts through 12's by the end of the year!
Homework: 12/1 - 12/5
SS 41
SS 42
3 Reflex Sessions (use Reflex calendar to help track!)
Social Studies: Mrs. Crush
The students will continue learning and exploring Ancient Egypt. They will be reading several reading passages about Ancient Egypt, while exploring the different geographical features, along with answering questions.
Religion: Mrs. Crush
We will begin our lesson on the Season of Advent, in our Word of Life workbooks. In this liturgical season, students will learn that Jesus taught us to prepare for His Second Coming by keeping watch and praying, that the liturgical actions of the Church during Advent fill us with anticipation for the fullness and joy of Christmas, and learn the significance of the "O Antiphons." In class, students will be assigned a feast day during Advent to research and present to the class. They will be creating a wreath that is decorated with objects, colors, and symbols that present key aspects of the feast day they have researched.
Important Announcements:
2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, February 11. This will be completed on Google Classroom. Optional: complete log on paper.
Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
