Skills we will be working on this week are:

Reading:

identify the themes of the story and explain how characters’ actions demonstrate specific story themes (hospitality, friendship, responsibility, irresponsibility)
identify literary devices such as, dialogue, narration, personification, and perspective (we have conversation on these topics as we read the chapters of the story)
identify which point of view a story is being told from (1st or 3rd)-(We are going much more in depth on this skill this week.)

Speaking/ Listening:

listen to a Read-Aloud for details that describe a character

Writing:

complete a graphic organizer to prepare for writing an opinion piece
draft and revise an opinion paragraph about how one specific character displays one of the 4 themes of the story

Language/Foundational Skills:

use syllabication to break written words into syllables
identify open, closed, magic e, and vowel team syllables (reading and writing words with long and short vowels)- (We will play a fun BINGO game!)

Homework: Disguise Mr. Toad Project due Friday, September 26th

-Mr. Henson may have them write a short story about how Mr. Toad uses his new disguise to escape this time!

Math-Mrs. Bennett

Our third graders are wrapping up their unit on understanding multiplication, and it’s been exciting to see how much they’ve grown! We’ve been using bar models to visualize multiplication, and students are now writing their own word problems and creating matching models — a great way to show their thinking. We’re also exploring the commutative property, noticing how changing the order of the factors doesn’t change the product. To celebrate their hard work, I’ve included a few student examples so you can see their creativity in action! Our unit test will be on Wednesday (moved back a day so students don’t have two tests on Tuesday with religion). To help your child prepare, please review the study guide, which is already available. Practicing multiplication facts together, asking your child to explain their thinking with a model, or having them create simple word problems at home are great ways to build confidence before the test.

3G Chapter 1 Study Guide - Understand Multiplication

Social Studies- Mrs. Crush

We will continue this week in Social Studies delving into our civic standards. The students will work on:

Explaining the basic purposes and functions of different governing bodies.
Comparing how diverse societies maintain order, safety, and enforce rules and laws.
Examining civic virtues and democratic principles across various world communities.
Understanding how processes, rules, and laws influence governance and problem-solving in diverse communities.

Students will be performing their short skits that represents their government in front of their classmates. The directions and scoring guide are located her for you to see as well.

Religion- Mrs. Crush

We will complete Chapter 1: The Invitation to Communion. Near the end of the week, we will begin Chapter 2: God is Love. This chapter will help students:

know that God reveals Himself to us as the Blessed Trinity, a perfect communion of love.
recall that God has a plan to share His love with us and He invites us to be in communion with Him.
know that the theological virtues fives us the ability to be holy.
begin to know that we were created for true happiness that comes from the gift of self to God and others.

Chapter 1: The Invitation to Communion Test is Tuesday, September 23.

*Items to study: Ch.1 Review (in Word of Life workbook), vocabulary words (these will be inside their binders), and highlighted text.

Student Led Prayer 2: Open Theme is due on Friday, September 26.
1. Students will create their prayer on Google Docs, posted on Google Classroom. They’ll have some class time but should plan to finish at home. If they choose a video, they will need to insert link into their prayer and/or upload to their assignment.

Optional: they may also choose to:

1. 1. Print prayer and upload it to the assignment. (Most did this for their 1st prayer).
  2. Create a Canva or Google Slide presentation and upload it to their assignment. If they choose to do this option, they must include all the parts of the prayer.
Chapter 2: Words to Know Definitions due Thursday, September 25.
1. Students will be given the words on Tuesday to begin/complete after their Chapter 1 test. This should stay in their Religion section of their binder. The definitions of the Words to Know are located in the back of their Word of Life workbooks.
Chapter 2: God is Love Test is Tuesday, October 7.

1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, October 29. This will be complete on Google Classroom.

Blessings in a Backpack

Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R. Kennedy Elementary which is close to Ascension.
