Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps

This week we will begin our normal daily schedule and students will begin switching classes! I think they will love the change of scenery throughout the day, as well as their other teachers. We have mostly been learning 3rd grade routines and procedures during the first 3 days. Now, we will begin Language Arts class (my favorite)! I cannot wait to dive into our first Unit of Amplify, Classic Tales: The Wind and the Willows. Please click the link below to view the caregiver letter providing more information on this unit.

Skills we will be working on this week are:

Reading:

compare and contrast the two characters from The Wind in the Willows.
identify the themes of the story.

Speaking/ Listening:

determine the main idea and supporting details of a text read aloud.
recount the events and themes of the story using images.

Language/Foundational Skills:

review short vowel sounds and multisyllable words.

Morphology:

Students will learn what morphology means and how we will apply it while reading to help us better understand new words.

Technically, morphology is "the study of the form of words". We will learn the meaning of specific prefixes and suffixes, as well as some Greek and Latin bases and how they can aid in our comprehension when reading new and challenging texts.

Writing:

Students will use descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings to rewrite a scene from Rat’s perspective.

Math-Mrs. Bennett

In the upcoming week, students will embark on an exciting journey into the world of mathematics, where they will discover that everyone is a mathematician! We will begin by engaging in activities that help us develop a positive math mindset, and also productive math habits. We will emphasize that pictures and manipulatives play a vital role in understanding mathematical concepts, helping to make abstract ideas more tangible. Additionally, we will highlight that struggle is an essential part of the learning process, as it encourages growth and resilience. Through a combination of whole group activities, small group math tasks, and personal reflections, students will engage in meaningful discussions and hands-on experiences that foster a deeper understanding of these key concepts. I am eager to see their confidence and curiosity blossom as we explore the fascinating world of math together this year!

Social Studies- Mrs. Crush

This year in Social Studies, our focus is on global interactions. Our goal is for students to develop thinking and decision-making skills that prepare them for responsible citizenship in a democratic society. Here’s what our third graders will be exploring:

Global Community: Understanding the impact of interactions between groups within Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
Governance: Explaining the basic purposes and functions of differing governing bodies around the world and comparing how diverse societies govern themselves.
Economics: Illustrating the relationship between supply and demand and describing examples of economic independence.
Culture: Exploring how cultural aspects spread beyond borders and influence how people adapt to their environments.
Local vs. Global: Comparing diverse world communities in terms of members, customs, and traditions while relating these to our local community and understanding how world events impact Kentucky.
Collaboration: Investigating how communities work together and recognizing the perspectives of diverse groups in today's world.

Unit One: Civics Standards

This week in Social Studies, our students will delve into civic standards. They will begin to work on:

Explaining the basic purposes and functions of different governing bodies.
Comparing how diverse societies maintain order, safety, and enforce rules and laws.
Examining civic virtues and democratic principles across various world communities.
Understanding how processes, rules, and laws influence governance and problem-solving in diverse communities.

We are excited to see our students engage with these concepts and develop a deeper understanding of their role as informed citizens!

Religion- Mrs. Crush

This Week:
We are thrilled to welcome our third graders this year! At the beginning of the week, we are focusing on establishing our classroom rules and expectations and familiarizing ourselves with the classroom layout.

We are particularly excited about implementing student-led prayers, which will occur at the start of each class. I will provide a model for the prayers on Google Classroom under the Student Led Prayers section.

In our Religion class, we will begin with Chapter 1: The Invitation to Communion. This chapter will help students:

Understand that God calls each of us to be in communion with Him.
Recognize that the Bible reveals God to us.
Learn about Jesus Christ as the Word of God who perfectly reveals God’s message.
Discover the meaning of character.
Know how to look up passages in the Bible.

Important Announcements:

Student-Led Prayers: Student-led prayers are due TBD*. Students will work on these during class on Thursday and Friday. No need to work on them Monday evening. Each student will have the opportunity to present their prayer at the beginning of class. ***Updated Wed. 8/20.
Chapter One Test: Ch. 1 Test will take place on Thursday, September 4. Items to study: Ch.1 Review (in Word of Life workbook), vocabulary words (these will be inside their binders), and highlighted text.
1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, October 29. This will be completed on Google Classroom.
