Cooler days are here! 🍂 Please remind your child(ren) to bring a cozy coat or wear pants to school. We’ll be heading outside for brain breaks, recess, and fresh air unless it’s raining or freezing. Let’s keep everyone warm and ready for outdoor fun! ❄️🧥
Important Reminder:
We will send home graded/completed work on Wednesdays. There will be a sheet for you to sign weekly showing that you have seen (and removed) all of their work. Forms from the office will also be included. Students have labeled the front pocket in their binder "Take Home".
We will be spending the next few weeks of December learning about Muhammad Ali. A couple years ago, my husband and I attended the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards. I was so inspired by the spirit of Muhammad Ali and the impact he had on the world and our city. This week, we continuing learning about significant life experiences that led Ali to boxing. We will continue to learn about his 6 core principles: Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect and Spirituality and how they are evident throughout his life. We will be reading excerpts from his memoir, articles, quotes, and poems to learn more about this Louisville native who spent his life fighting for more than a gold medal.

Thank you to everyone who attended the 4th and 5th Grade Poetry Slam. I am so impressed with all of these young poets and the courage it took to read in front of so many adults and friends.
My face hurt from smiling! I will post the link to the recording when I receive it.

Over the next week, we will be reviewing several important decimal skills based on students’ most recent assessment. We will continue working on comparing decimals, especially addressing the common misconception that a number with more digits is automatically larger. Students will practice lining up the place values and comparing through the thousandths place. We will also revisit rounding decimals, focusing not just on rounding to the nearest whole number but to the nearest hundredths and thousandths as well. In addition, we will strengthen our understanding of decimal relationships, including how finding one-tenth of a number or ten times a number shifts digits to the right or left on the place value chart. Students will take an assessment on decimal place value understanding before Christmas break, and they already have access to a study guide to help them prepare.

In the coming week, our class will begin learning how to divide fractions, including both situations where a fraction is divided by a whole number and where a whole number is divided by a fraction. Students will explore real-world scenarios for each type of problem—for example, splitting a fraction of a recipe among friends, or figuring out how many 1/4-cup servings can be made from a whole amount. We will focus on how the quotient changes depending on the context: dividing a fraction by a whole number makes the amount smaller, while dividing a whole number by a unit fraction often results in a larger quotient because we are determining how many fractional pieces fit into the whole. Instruction will include visual models, number lines, and bar diagrams to help students understand why the procedures work, not just how to follow the steps.
This week students will have two Simple Solutions lessons. Like November, they will continue to have 3 Reflex sessions per week as part of their homework leading up to Christmas break. Maintaining this routine is essential, as it helps us stay on track to meet our goal of achieving full fluency through the 10s by the end of 4th grade. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting strong math habits at home!

We will continue our lesson on the Season of Advent, in our Word of Life workbooks. In this liturgical season, students will learn that Jesus taught us to prepare for His Second Coming by keeping watch and praying, that the liturgical actions of the Church during Advent fill us with anticipation for the fullness and joy of Christmas, and learn the significance of the "O Antiphons." In class, students will be assigned a feast day during Advent to research and present to the class. They will be creating a wreath that is decorated with objects, colors, and symbols that present key aspects of the feast day they have researched.
Important Announcements:
2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 2nd Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, February 11. This will be completed on Google Classroom. Optional: complete log on paper.
