What we are Learning This Week
Math: Mrs. Bennett
We will continue to work through our next math unit on factors and multiples! This unit builds on what we just learned about area—students will now use arrays to represent numbers and explore all the different ways they can be formed, helping them discover each number’s factors. They’ll also learn how to find common factors and multiples, and understand the difference between prime and composite numbers. These skills create a strong foundation for future topics like fractions and divisibility rules. Students will focus on learning divisibility rules to help them determine all the factors of a given number. The rules students will learn are listed below! Unfortunately, there aren't great rules for 7 and 8.

This week we begin our next unit, poetry!
This unit gives students tools and strategies for approaching poetry, training them in the methods and devices poets use and equipping them to read and interpret both formal and free verse poems. It gives them continual opportunities to create poems themselves, allowing them to practice what they have learned. A key aspect of the Poetry unit is encouraging and equipping students to write original poems. This allows for creative and imaginative expression, but it also affords students the opportunity to implement the poetic devices they have learned in the reading components of each lesson. The writing portion of the unit allows students to apply their new poetry knowledge, further solidifying their understanding of the craft of poetry. Throughout this unit, students will practice using the poetic devices exemplified by each poem. They will compose rhymes, similes, and metaphors; use repetition, anaphora, and alliteration; and plan, draft, and revise several original poems inspired by the poems studied in this unit.
The culminating event for this unit will be a joint poetry slam for 4th and 5th grade. Parents will be invited to this event so please be on the look out for the date!

Several schools collect food for low-income students who might not otherwise have food over the weekends. The program is called Blessings in a Backpack. There is a link below that you and your student(s) can sign up for. The volunteers simply walk around to each item putting it in a bag. One location is Alex R.
