Week of May 4-8

Important Reminders:

Take Home Sheet:

• We will send home graded/completed work on Wednesdays. There will be a sheet for you to sign weekly showing that you have seen (and removed) all of their work. Forms from the office will also be included. Students have labeled the front pocket in their binder "Take Home".

Ipads:

• Students are expected to come to school with their iPads charged to 80% or higher. We’ve noticed several students arriving with batteries under 20%, which requires charging during class and interrupts learning. If a student comes to school three or more days in a week below 80%, they will receive a written assignment and will not be able to take their iPad home. This may result in incomplete work if they cannot access their homework. Please help your child come prepared each day to ensure a smooth and productive learning experience! Thank you!

Blue Group:

We are wrapping up our unit on multiplying fractions! Students received a study guide today to help give them ample time to prepare for the final math test of the school year. Before the test, we will continue strengthening our understanding of fraction multiplication by focusing on area models with fractional side lengths. Using post-it notes students will explore how multiplication can be used to find area, including how partial pieces combine to make wholes. This activity will help students visualize why multiplying fractions works and connect it to real-world measurement concepts. We will also continue practicing fraction word problems, where students will identify key clues to determine whether a situation calls for addition or multiplication. Throughout the week, students will explain their reasoning, model their thinking, and strengthen their problem-solving strategies as we finish the year strong!

*The test will be next week- the soonest it will be is Tuesday 5/12. I want to see where we are at the end of the week before making a final decision. I will communicate with your student! 

Yellow Group:

As we begin our final math unit of the school year, 5th grade students will be exploring rates and percentages! Students will learn how rates compare two quantities with different units, such as miles per hour or cost per item, and how percentages represent parts out of 100. Throughout the unit, students will look for patterns and make connections between fractions, decimals, and percents to deepen their understanding of proportional thinking. We will use real-world examples such as shopping discounts, sports statistics, recipes, and unit pricing to help students see how rates and percentages are used in everyday life. Students will practice important math vocabulary including rate, unit rate, percent, equivalent ratios, decimal, fraction, and compare while solving problems, explaining their reasoning, and applying their learning to meaningful situations!
