If you were to make all the oceans suddenly vanish, what would the seafloor look like?
This lesson investigates the 70% of solid earth we can't see directly. Once you dip your toes into the ocean you are on the seafloor, which has many distinct features. Students will learn the seven major features of the seafloor as well as the basic processes that create and shape islands.
Warm Ups, etc:
Under the Sea - introductory interest grabber
Underwater - review the features of the seafloor
Birth of and Island - includes a reading passage from Rachel Carson's "The Sea Around Us" in which she describes the rise of a volcanic island.
Land, Lost at Sea - review island formation
Instruction, Presentations, Assignments, Activities, etc:
Presentation - Features of the Seafloor (Handout slide 2) - (abbreviated master copy)
Diagrams - Islands and Island Formation (diagrams constructed from hand-drawn notes- see classmates if you were absent...) Island (above water), Seamount (below water, pointed), Guyot (below water, flat top indicates once above water/erosion)
Animations of Island Formation - on teacher iPad
Activity - Mapping the Seafloor - graph data, interpolate and interpret data, respond to questions - requires small-ish grid graphing paper
