What job can you have where you get paid to be wrong?
This lesson examines the major factors of the atmosphere and differentiates between weather (right here, right now) and climate (regional, over time.) We may be most impacted on a daily basis by weather, the overall patterns of climate are also important. This lesson examines the data that is collected, the tools used to collect the data and how this data is shared and analyzed.
Warm Ups, etc:
Weather Station - diagram and visit the school weather station to discuss tools and data collection
Weather Station Review (contains blank of weather station for student diagram)
Weather Vs. Climate - review the differences between these two concepts.
Climate of Surry - review climate data as it relates to Surry County
Getting Paid to Be Wrong (can be repeated as "Weather Data" at any point
Instruction, Presentations, Assignments, Activities, etc:
Handout - Climate - contains both a blank and completed master copy
Activity: Climographs - construct climograph for Surry (extension uses locations around the globe for different students, use Google Earth for a virtual tour of those locations)
Diagram- Transfer Of Energy 1. Radiation- transfer by waves (sun warming earth, stick figure warming self by fire...) extension - electromagnetic spectrum 2. Conduction- transfer by contact (something plugged in, a punch...)3. Convection- transfer by density difference (density current, zone of convection in sun...)--explain that weather is driven by a combination of these forces
Weather Map- Blank Weather Map - students take notes around map regarding role of pressure in wind, Air Masses, Fronts, station models- then use current weather data to create weather map and station model for current conditions.
