What materials are found in water and what factors influence them?
This lesson examines the properties that influence solubility. A solvent dissolves solutes into a solution. Other items remain suspended in a mixture. The vocabulary and measurement of these properties will be examined
Warm Ups, etc:
The Duck’s Back – questions to introduce the topic of water and its properties as a solvent
Solutions to Questions- questions related to the measurement and vocabulary of solutions
Instruction, Presentations, Assignments, Activities, etc:
Vocabulary - Solubility - key terms for understanding how we discuss materials in water
Notes and Handout - Stuff in Water - the materials that are found in water.
Worksheet – Solubility and Salinity – students interpret graphs and diagrams that relate the principles of water as a solvent and an introduction to salinity and seawater.
Closure: Discuss “haline” and “halocline” in relation to salt concentration gradients and question #14-16 on WS, also discuss 0/00 symbol.
