How is salinity distributed around the world?
This lesson goes into greater "depth" regarding seawater. It looks at the salinity distribution as well as how certain characteristics of seawater change with depth.
Warm Ups, etc:
Salty Scientist Say What? – two statements that illustrate the difficulty, but simplicity of scientific language.
Salinity Insanity – a review of the terms and percentages/ppt/psu of salt water.
Depth Graphs - students copy vertical profile graphs of several qualities of seawater
Instruction, Presentations, Assignments, Activities, etc:
Demo- making seawater- use balance, beaker and other appropriate tools to create a simulation of seawater. Allow it to evaporate in a windowsill over the course of the unit to discuss how salinity changes as the volume decreases.
Map – salinity distribution of oceans – students color to illustrate gradients and generalized patterns of salinity around the world
Map – salinity gradient of Chesapeake Bay – students show the gradient of salinity of the brackish Bay.
Closure 1: Halocline - article/video about an underwater river in Mexico
Closure 2: ESRI EMU - GIS data about water qualities around the world's oceans
