Lesson: Renewable Resources

How is technology and engineering making use of the open-system nature of energy on earth?

Certain resources are constantly replenished, while others are generated continuously through natural processes. However there are many technological, engineering and environmental issues that impact the use of these resources. This lesson explores both the sources and the issues surrounding renewable resources.

  1. For each of the following, be able to describe the collection, use, advantages, drawbacks and other issues that define this resource.
  • Solar
  • Wind
  • Geothermal
  • Biomass
  • Hydrogen fuel cell

Warm Ups, etc:

Instruction, Presentations, Assignments, Activities, etc:

DIB...Renewable Energy- students analyze a graph that illustrates the generation of renewable energy vs. consumption of energy in relation to state.

Presentation/Handout (notes)- Renewable Resources - diagrams illustrate the different types of energy production from "renewable" sources. Students complete information on descriptions and identification of the advantages and limitations of each source.
