How solid is the earth beneath your feet?
This lesson reviews the major concepts of geology, including the composition and structure of the earth and the processes of the rock cycle and plate tectonics. Students will examine how the earth's surface has changed over its history, and what evidence we have of those changes.
1. Composition & Distribution - What materials are found in the earth and how is the matter arranged around the earth?
2. Dynamics and Processes
Summarize the processes of the Rock Cycle and explain how they shape the earth.
The Theory of Plate Tectonics - What is the evidence? How does it work? What is its impact on earth?
3. History - How has the earth changed over its 4.6 billion years?
Warm Ups:
Math Rocks! - students use information on earth's structure and composition to make calculations
Instruction, Presentations, Assignments, Activities, etc:
DiB...Confirmed Impacts - students interpret a graph about impacts of extraterrestrial objects over the last 140 million years.
Chart - Lithosphere Composition & Distribution
Structure of the earth - basic features of Inner core, Outer core, Mantle, Crust
Spinning inner core = magnetic field (reversals)
Crust - 2 types Oceanic crust (w/ marine sediments), Continental crust
Dynamics and Processes
Summarize the processes of the Rock Cycle and explain how they shape the earth.
WS - Rock Cycle - students review the processes, forces and rocks of the rock cycle
