What can I expect to learn and do in the next 18 weeks in Environmental Science?
This lesson introduces the classroom, its policies, the instructor and major overview for the semester. It will establish an understanding of the role and impact of human society at the intersections of the natural (physical and biological) worlds. Best practices will be discussed and established, with a focus on critical thinking with an open mind.
Warm Ups, etc.:
Simple Possessions - introduce the concept that humans' relationship with the natural environment is incredibly intense, and that ALL we possess is from either the physical or biological environments.
Summer 201? - Environmental Science , Summer 2025 Environment - current event questions that also introduce concepts of regulations and careers associated with this course.
Logos - Use images of logos from government agencies for review. Discussion should include choices of imagery and design.
EPA Budget and Workforce - students analyze a data chart regarding the budgets and workforce of the EPA over the last decade.
Instruction, Presentations, Assignments, Activities, etc:
Activity - Defining Natural and Social Systems - paired partners outside (&inside?)
- take the students outside to examine the school within the natural environment.

Data Is Beautiful...Like Japan in Summer - data visualization of daily avg temp in Japan from 1876-2017. Students interpret data and discuss pros/cons of this method of sharing information.
Activity - Superfund
Phase 1- Identify and research 3 superfund sites in different states, compose a quick "thumbnail" summary of each
Phase 2 - Activity - Superfund Supervillain (or Superhero...)
- choose one specific site and create a supervillain who gains their power from the site
- develop a back-story and transformation of individual into supervillain/hero (exposure)
- description of superpowers and costume
- compose a more complete summary of your site, including any remediation or other concerns that have impacted it.
