This lesson is a "case study" of the students location. It will examine specific natural and social systems in Surry and Virginia, as well as how those interact with the wider world. It will unify themes, involve the nature and numbers of science, and take into account perspectives and impacts.

This case study seeks to identify the natural and social systems of Surry and Virginia. Surry is defined by geographic political boundaries, but it is really a huge collection of features of both natural and social aspects. How these qualities reflect and interact those of Virginia (and the wider world) will be examined.

Case Study - Instructions for group work
All groups do work on rivers, then assign sections of the other work to discrete groups. Have some overlap between groups with one each from 2/3 and 4/5 to spur discussions during the Summary Handout portion of the lesson. All groups complete Section 6

- go over during open discussion with a blank map presented/drawn on the board. Include all critical information, but also allow things to develop as discussion progresses.
Large Blank Map - 11"x17", but can be printed standard "to fit" (you'd just need to write small)
Presentation with blank slide/information included for completing blank maps & information
- Students use colored pencils, etc. to annotate blank maps of Virginia, each map highlighting a specific environmentally important factor. An area is also provided to fill in notes from presentation/discussion.
