What are the "Where/What/Who/When/Why and How" of Pollutants?
This lesson is a "case study" of the types, sources and impacts of pollution. In order to better understand the role of chemistry and chemicals within environmental systems, students will examine specific cases of pollution. Other activities (DiB, group participation...) will add support to the lesson.
Warm Ups, etc.:
Pandemic Pollution - describe, give examples of the impact of COVID - 19 on pollution
Instruction, Presentations, Assignments, Activities, etc:
DiB...London's Pollution Problem - students analyze data pertaining to urban pollution in the city of London, England. Focus on data types, ranges, sources and data interpretation.
Critical Reading - PCBs in Orca - (web source) (questions) - students read an article about the impact of long-banned pollutants on populations of orca around the world
Presentation/Video - Flint, Michigan - Background information and 24 minute BBC documentary about the Flint water issues after 3 years. Includes interviews with scientists, doctors, citizens, students...
resource articles (five thirty eight)(Michigan public radio)(the MATH)
Small Group Activity - Case Study Summary - small groups answer the questions for a specific case, then they combine with other groups, refine and present
Group Activity - Pollution Game - (types)(pollutants)(team sheet) - students break into groups and then "race" to collect as many pollutants as possible. Groups then organize/classify their pollutants.
